Q:We enclosed our porch and would like to paint the 60 year old knotty pine ceiling. What is the best primer to use? I don't know what type of finish it has currently, my guess is that it has a shellac finish.

Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! When using Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer on exterior surfaces, even with enclosed porches, it can be used as a spot primer only. We recommend using this primer to spot prime knots in the wood prior to priming the whole surface with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer. This will ensure lasting results with the B-I-N Primer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Cover-Stain-1-gal-White-Oil-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-3501/100398377 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Our Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer may be cleaned from applicators using acetone, denatured alcohol, ammoniated detergent or 99% isopropyl alcohol. Q:Would this product work well to apply to vct floor tiles? Would it adhere to vct tiles and have some scuff resistance to prevent chipping and flaking?

            Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! While Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer will adhere to this surface type, we do not recommend this primer for use on flooring. This product will not withstand direct foot traffic and is also not recommend for use on floor paints. It can be used on subflooring prior to applying new flooring, such as tile, wood, or carpeting. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Can this be used on particle board based floor

              Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Jean! While Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer can be used on particle board, when used on flooring material, it is for subfloor use only. This means that the primed surface must have flooring material used over it, such as wood flooring, tile, carpet, or vinyl. This primer cannot be used on a floor under a floor paint or epoxy. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

                Answer This Question

A:  I would not try this. It is shellac based so like an oil paint if you try an overcoat that is latex based you may get very poor results. Supposedly you can paint a latex over oil based primer, but I have had failure to bond with a latex over oil based product. Stock with like kinds.

A:  Great question, Sandie! Yes, Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer can be used on interior paneling surfaces. This primer can then be topcoated with oil or water-based paints after 45 minutes. Make sure to apply a topcoat within 3 days to ensure full adhesion. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

                    Answer This Question

A:  Great question, MaryJane! Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer can be applied to the exterior of the fireplace. We do not recommend it for use on the inside, as the exposure to an open flame and the high heat will cause the primer and any paint over it to blister and peel. At this time, we do not offer a product that we can recommend for use inside a fireplace. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3
