Q:Pursuant to this response:" Shellac is a natural resin, and cures to a very hard, inflexible surface that will not expand and contract with wood through seasonal temp", will this work in insulated but un-conditioned garage from 20F winter to 130F summer?

Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help Mitch. Because Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac dries to an inflexible surface, it cannot be exposed to the temperature variations in your garage, this temperature variance can cause the shellac to crack. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

by|Jan 24, 2023

A:  If the shellac is allowed to fully cure in an environment somewhere between 50F and 80F, then it will be fine later on at the extremes mentioned.

Q:Are amber shellac and clear shellac compatible? I am concerned that 2 coats of amber on my new knotty pine walls may be too dark. Therefore one clear coat over one amber coat may be my solution.

A:  Traci I have used on cedar on my front porch. It definitely gives a pretty reddish tint to the wood but it’s beautiful. I would say if you have a piece of the paneling left to try before using just incase you don’t like it .

        by|Apr 6, 2022

A:  You know, you have to let the first one dry well before you give the other one a clear. you can use both, amber and clear.

A:  Yes, we did one coat of amber and one clear coat on our entire tongue and groove ceiling and it looks beautiful.

                  Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for reaching out Tony. The correct way to apply Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is several light coats with a brush, pad or lint-free wiping cloth and let dry for 1 hour before sanding with 220 grit or finer sandpaper. Allow any subsequent coats to dry at least 1 hour before sanding lightly and recoating. Zinsser Shellac cannot be spray applied. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

                  by|Dec 9, 2021

A:  Yes, spraying is the best way to apply it for even color. It dries very quickly. The first coat should be sanded lightly with 320 or 400 grit. You'll also want to lightly sand the final coat.

                    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Renae! Since Rust-Oleum Zinsser Shellac Finish and Sealer is not a staining product, a conditioner is not needed. Wood conditioners tend to help ensure an even color with stains on softer woods. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Can I apply your orange shellac directly on to new knotty pine planks in my great room? Over time, will it prevent the bleeding of the existing knots? Will it give me a finished coat with one application?

                      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Our Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is an excellent option for sealing knotty wood, and can be used as a final finish on interior wood surfaces. Since this is a waxed shellac, nothing may be applied over it, and if this coating is being used to coat and protect the planks, several coats would be needed to build up the thickness to protect the surface. Another option would be to use Our Zinsser SealCoat to seal just the knots on the wood. Since this is a de-waxed shellac, a polyurethane could be used over it, and polyurethane is a much longer lasting, and low maintenance finish. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-1-qt-SealCoat-Wood-Sealer-824H/202070456 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  We recommend applying Rust-Oleum Zinsser Shellac Finish and Sealer in a test area first to ensure the desired finish. You will also want to ensure the area is cooled and free of any loose debris. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Yes you can. Shellac is an alcohol based finish that has only one enemy water. If the wood is dry and it will be used in a dry location then it is great. It really dries fast so you have to always work with a quick brush and a wet edge.

A:  Happy to help, Matt! If wanting to use a different coating over Rust-Oleum Zinsser Shellac Finish and Sealer, you will need to use a dewaxed shellac first as this product contains wax. We recommend using Rust-Oleum Zinsser SealCoat Universal Sanding Sealer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-1-qt-SealCoat-Universal-Sanding-Sealer-Case-of-6-854/205140204? - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Hi David, our Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac has a natural, amber hue. While we do not have specific testing information regarding tinting this product, aniline dyes are commonly used in woodworking to tint shellac, however, we recommend testing for proper color and performance to ensure the desired results. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  I use lacquer thinner for a lot of things but when thinning the shellac I would use denatured alcohol instead. There are various theories on how much to use but I personally wouldn't cut the shellac by more than 1/3 with the alcohol. Just my opinion someone else may have a different idea.
