Q:Is this ready as-is as an initial sealant coat or would I need to cut with denatured alcohol ?

Answer This Question
A: Depends.
1. If over bare wood, I would cut it 2 parts shellac to 1 part denatured alcohol for the initial coat, followed by a second uncut coat.
2. If using it as a barrier coat over previous finishes, use uncut.

A: Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is ready to use. Do not thin this product. Apply several light coats with a brush, pad or lint-free wiping cloth and let dry for 1 hour before sanding with 220 grit or finer sandpaper. Allow any subsequent coats to dry at least 1hour before sanding lightly and recoating.

Answer This Question
A: You can, Scott! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Amber Shellac can be applied over polyurethane. We do recommend lightly sanding the polyurethane with 180 or 220 grit sandpaper prior to application of the shellac. This will give you a warmer color on the surface and may be what you're looking for.

A: Shellac sticks to anything. Durability is NOT on par with urethane. Therefore, you should topcoat with urethane after you get the tone you want. Results are mixed using oil-based poly over regular shellac. The longer you let it cure before topcoating, the better your chances. As always, test on scrap. I have no data on water-based.

Q:I'm installing 1,350 sq ft of pine 1 X 8 beadboard on our ceiling and want to pre-finish the boards with Amber shellac using a sprayer. Three questions:
1. I have limited working space . After spraying how long must I wait until I can stack the boards (if ever). Building racks is a big chore.
2. We have a very stable environment because we just spray foamed the rafters to R-28, to avoid cupping do we need to spray both sides? How many coats by side?
3. Any tips for lightly sanding such a large amount of boards? Or on spraying shellac?

A: Happy to help! We recommend applying several light coats of Rust-Oleum Zinsser Shellac Traditional Finish and Sealer with a brush, pad or lint-free wiping cloth and let dry for 1 hour before sanding with 220 grit or finer sandpaper. Each coat needs to be allowed to dry for 1 hour before they can be lightly sanded and recoated. This product fully cures after at least 24 hours. We also offer Rust-Oleum Zinsser Shellac in a clear aerosol application as well!

Answer This Question
A: Prior to application of Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac, Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free of dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil, wax, mildew, wallpaper adhesive, or any contamination that may interfere with adhesion. If unsure of cleanliness, always wash surfaces with household ammonia and water solution, appropriate cleaning solution or solvent (Do not use TSP as a cleaner). Remove any peeling and/or unsound coatings. Sand any remaining paint film edges smooth with the surface. Bare wood that has been exposed for more than 4 weeks should be lightly sanded with 80 to 100
grit sandpaper to remove weathered wood fibers.

A: you can but many not be smooth or stick fully. you might need to strip/sand it

A: Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is not paintable. This is waxed shellac which means coatings will not adhere directly to this surface. In order for you to paint over this coating, you will need to apply a coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye SealCoat. SealCoat is a dewaxed shellac and will make the surface paintable. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-1-gal-SealCoat-Clear-Matte-Sanding-Sealer-Case-of-2-821/202067233
