Q:Will this stud finder go thru plaster walls

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello. Because of the varying density of materials that make up lath and plaster constructed walls, a standard stud sensor tool (such as many of the Zircon StudSensor products) will not work to find studs (this is stated on the packaging). The preferred technique would be to use a Zircon Studsensor that includes a “metal scan” mode such as the HD800. This will allow you to search out and map the nails that hold the horizontal lath pieces to the studs. This way it’s possible to map out the studs accurately. Check out Zircon’s website for detailed instructions on lath and plaster stud finding technique

Q:All live AC wires have shielding on them. Plus there is sheathing over the individual wires. So are you saying this stud finder will not locate normal household wiring?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hello Denny. First we want to make you aware that the HD800 does not have a AC scan mode. It does have a wire warning but this does not tell where the wire is. It reads the e-field given off by live unshielded AC wiring letting you know there is live unshielded wiring in the vicinity you are scanning. The HD900 does have AC scan mode and will find live unshielded AC wiring. Most electrical wire is covered in a rubber or plastic coating called insulation, this not shielding. Most shielded wiring has a metal foil wrapped around the wire that is then covered by the insulation. The AC wiring in most houses is not shielded. Also wires in metal conduit cannot be detected by wire warning or AC scan mode. Hope this answers your question. Thank you.

A:  Hello Charlie. Due to the variables in materials and construction techniques Zircon stud sensors are not recommended for exterior use. Thank you

            by|Apr 13, 2020

A:  Great question Charlie, i have not personally tried it but one can always try, check with the store or the manufacturer itself. All the best & please stay safe.

              by|Apr 12, 2020

A:  Sorry to answer like this but it depends on the install. The finder does have a deep scan mode. I have never had occasion to try a cement board install. It would also be impacted by thickness of the cement board and the sheathing on the home. If the home has sheathing over the studs and then cement board over the sheathing, you likely will not find the stud even on deep scan mode. The product has worked great for me especially on metal studs and finding electrical wiring in the wall. Good luck.

A:  Yes it will work horizontally.

                  by|Jun 8, 2019

A:  Hello. Yes it will work horizontally as long as what you are scanning for is running horizontal. That is to say, you need to be parallel with whatever you are scanning for. Thank you.

A:  Short answer...yes. It finds studs regardless of their orientation. So if they run vertically you slide it left to right. If they run horizontally you would slide it top to bottom. An example would be finding rafters in a ceiling.

A:  Yes, I bought this more powerful version than the HD 70 that I already had to find floor joists through carpet. Works very well horizontally.

A:  Hello Eric. The HD800 will detect ferrous (magnetic) metal (such as 1⁄2 inch rebar) up to 3 in. (76 mm) deep and non-ferrous (non-magnetic) metal (such as copper pipes) up to 11⁄2 in. (38 mm) deep. Thank you.

A:  Yes. It will detect copper up to 3-inches deep. I found the copper piping in my wall behind my bath tub where I'm cutting out a section to make an access panel. Remember to place it on the wall first, then calibrate it before moving it over the wall.
