I chose this one over all of the other ones because it claimed a 15 year warranty. Not only was it poor quality breaking off after only a year, but when I reached out to the company hey said I needed to show my receipt which I did not have because I purchased it in store. I did not know I had to keep my receipt because not only was it not on the shovel and nowhere to be found on the home depot website. I would recommend actively staying away from any products made by this company

I wanted to like this, but it didn't last 2 weeks
We bought a new home that the previous owner got a little trigger happy with the rosebushes. 33 in all. This guy did manage to get 13 out for me. On the 14th, after a very minor push, the neck where the shovel connected to the handle bent. Decided no big deal, these things happen.
Decided to shovel even more gingerly and even then, I don't think I've ever had a shovel fail this way. Completely sheared away from the handle at the STEEL.
I don't recommend this shovel.

Weak metal
The metal bent when trying to dig up a root, making the shovel lopsided. Ive only had it for 2.5 months and used it only a handful of times. Would not buy again.

Best Shovel - Ever!!!
Was hesitant about spending this much on a shovel and whether it would perform as well as everyone says - and it does perform, very well to be honest! I’ve used this to dig out an old bush in my backyard with much less effort than if I were to have used something else! The comfort step is great, too. I’ve stood on it (150 lbs.) while trying to dig out my bush and it’s definitely solid. I especially love this shovel for digging out dried-out brown zoysia sod from my yard. The spade tip is strong and it can be run through underneath the sod to very easily take it out and replace with new ones.

Didn't last 3 months
Bought this and worked good at first, but then you can start to notice "creaking" at the neck of the spade and give it 2 more diggs after that and the photos will speak for them self.....and mind you I can't find anything on the website about a "15 YEAR WARRANTY" just a 90 day

This is a great digging shovel. The handle is comfortable and the blade is sharp. I dug out 9 stumps and a massive flower bed that we're renovating. My old wood handle shovel broke so I decided to try out fiberglass and it's solid. I know you're supposed to use a pry bar to lift out stumps, but this thing has handled the task very well. I'm not sure why you'd spend more money on another shovel. You won't regret getting this one!

Im a gardener/pruner for most of my life, as i went through toools quickly i started buying better tools. I really like Ames wooden handle tools as they have a good strong feel to them and i am hard on tools, and that they are wooden handles. I perfer wood as i like its looks and that it's strong if you just keep them out of the rain, and yes they have a 15 year guarantee so i definitely recommend this product...

Ames used to be the best shovel out there. I still have several blade that just need a new handle. I bought this one since it was only $2 more than buying just a handle to fix my old one. It is super flexy and twists easy in the hard AZ dirt and rocks. Handle was creaking since day one. Are they made of pine now??? The handle broke after about 50 minutes of using it over 3 months. Ames quality has gone down hill from what they used to be. Will not buy another. Maybe just an ash handle for my old spade that didnt flex.

For the price of this shovel, i definitely feel like i got my money's worth. The fiberglass handle is a lil lighter than the old wood. And if you grew up using wood handles and dealt with them breaking, the change is a relief. I would recommend to anyone for light to medium work.

The shovel seems to have plenty of strength, but lacks any torsional stability. Unless you jump on it with both feet, it has a tendency to twist rather than enter the soil straight. Even though it looks rugged with wide area for your foot to push on the shovel, the way that the handle is attached to the spade does not prevent any slippage and allows the entire tool to twist within the connection.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS TOOL FOR ANYTHING BUT THE LIGHTEST OF LIGHT DUTY WORK!!!

I needed to dig up and replace a few irritation lines around my house
My previous shovel of 15 years finally gave out. This one is very light and very comfortable to use. Feels very sturdy. I used it to pry up some roots and rocks and and it handled the stress with ease.

This shovel looks like it’s going to be great to have around the house. I’m not sure how it would hold up to every-day jobsite type use but for an occasional use such as in the backyard of a suburban home, this should do well. It is light and easy to use plus it is easy to grip onto with the rubber/foam end of the handle. The comfort step also works well to keep feet from sliding off when pushing the shovel into the ground.

A sturdy tool
The finish on the wood is not 'furniture grade', a bit rough.
However that is perfectly OK for a shovel. Some 200-400 grit sandpaper could easily fix that, if you wish.
Took me ~ 20 seconds to knock off the sharp spots in the finish...
You should be wearing appropriate footwear (and gloves) using this tool.
The bent edges of the shovel blade backside have 'unique' anti-slip features. (See picture)
The three punched holes in the lip of the blade provide excellent 'traction' for a boot.
Works well for my general needs.
This shovel has a lot of thoughtful features which show very good engineering design. The top of the handle has a cushioned area about ten inches in length for easy and comfortable gripping (see picture). Secondly, the top of the spade has six perforations with "starred" grip points around those holes to give your foot a firm grip on the top of the spade when you are pushing down on the blade (see pictures) . Your foot will not slip off and you will not lose momentum in digging in. The wooden handle is substantial and well-finished. This is really an "heirloom" tool which will be passed on for generations, in my opinion. Great price too! I highly recommend this shovel.
This shovel is made great just look at the pictures below
Where you put your foot to use is wonderful
I've never seen a shovel with those "I call them foot guards"
Can't wait to use my new shovel
Right now there is nothing to plant or dig up but you better believe when there is guess what I will be using yep this shovel
Have lots to do later on.
It arrived with a BLUNT tip! I'm not kidding! Tried it, not impressed. Took it into the garage and used an angle grinder on the front end. It digs much better now! I dug a small hole to get dirt to fill a hole in my lawn, it has Great traction on the steps where my feet pushed it into the ground. The shelf ears did not bend at all. It has a piece of plastic around between the wood and the metal, I'm guessing it helps, there was no wood strain noise when I was digging.
I'm a firm believer if, it's not broken, don't fix it. Well, this shovel might be a different material then the shovels from 100 years ago, I don't know.
I bought this a year ago but didn't use it very much until this year. I started taking out some bushes along my driveway and always thought the handle was going to break. It never did, but the shovel head bent sideways about 30 degrees. Ames is working with me to send a replacement. I think its good for some jobs, but not heavy duty.

Solid for digging and prying
I have been using this shovel to remove bushes and shrubs and it never feel like I am over-stressing the handle or the blade. As for digging in general, if you can lift the dirt you can use this shovel for it. It does seem to be heavier than its wooden handle counterpart but the difference in weight is the difference in strength.

I thought I was getting a quality product...
I paid the premium price for this shovel so I would have a good shovel for all my future digging. The 4th time I used it, the metal where it wraps around the handle just sheared and was cut in half and bent, so it's instant worthless junk! I can't believe it broke with no real stress put on the shovel. Usually it's the handle that breaks, never had the metal part just break!
