I used this and the liquid to try to strip paint off my deck railing and event wall. It literally did nothing. Instructions were closely followed and now I have an additional project to remove Citristrip and buy a different stripper to accomplish what I originally set out to do. I’ve never felt so disappointed in a product.

Citristrip is a good product that performs well overall given the product's formula - one that is far less toxic than alternatives. It may require more than one application to remove certain paints or mutliple layers but given the warnings on other options which can literally kill you if not used with all due care (see https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/423%20Paint%20Stripper%20Publication.pdf), it's worth the effort!

I used Citristrip to remove old varnish from a gun stock. After applying it as directed the varnish was easily scraped off after the Citristrip dried in about 45 minutes. There were some difficult spots and it was applied again and after 45 minutes of drying time it was scraped again and all the varnish was removed. I would definitely use this product again.

Inconsistent performance and damaged project
I use citrus chip on a few wood stripping projects around the house and I would not recommend it. My first used it on several doors that had paint on them and later on some varnished furniture. I had very mixed results on the effectiveness of it being able to strip oil-based paint The worst part of it that it left streaks in the wood that were permanent. You can still see the streaks in the stain and varnish that I applied afterwards. This product is not worth the risk to your project.

Gooey Mess
Bought this to remove the present latex stain on the interior wooden trim of my Pella windows. I had been using sanding with Dremel multitools and wanted to try this. It is very thick and goes on easily and does soften the stain. However, it needs to be removed before it is totally dry. Therein lies the problem, it comes off as a sticky, gooey mess that fouls your removal tools. In addition, it still leaves little streaks of the stain on the wood as the trim is not totally flat but has contours that are impossible to scrape easily and thoroughly. On a positive note, if you were using this on a flat surface with a thick layer of paint on it and didn't mind the goo and the need to still do a light sanding, it would be OK to get the heavy stuff off.

If you are planning on removing old stain or paint from your deck or any surface, WOW, THIS STUFF WORKS!! I tried another brand then heard about this one on Home Depot Site and it took 4 layers of paint and stain from the last 15+ years off my deck, used a power washer after applying and letting it sit for 30 minutes and BAM...back to the original wood! LOVE IT

Citristrip has changed formula.
I am stripping an old dresser. I had a bottle of Citristrip on hand for a couple years. used it to strip dresser, worked great, one coat took off so much of old finish. Use it up and bought another bottle, poor results after two coats with this new bottle. also thicker than older version too. Had to buy different brand to complete my project. Huge waste of money.

I am using on my Therma-tru front door (which was suggested by the manufacturer since the older strippers are no longer available) It is working, but taking 3-4 application due to the "wood grain" look, and can only use a nylon bristle brush to remove on this type of door. My wife has been working with door in place and about 2-3 hrs per day (only stripping exterior). Been at it 4 days so far. Still have a few tough spots. I recommend if you are patient, have time, and a wife who is willing to tackle it, like mine is. It does work! If this was on wood with scrapper would be great.

Gel spreads relatively easily and relatively low odor. Used it on 2 coats of latex paint and a water-based primer. Mostly removed both in about 30 minutes. Applied a second coat to strip remainder. Some odor retained on the surface. Wood grain did not raise noticeably, but some moisture on the surface. Dried overnight before sanding. Would use it again.
