Breaks and sticks inside
I am using this on a ryobi trimmer. Was using rhino but had some trouble with jams , thought I would try something different. Had not trimmed 10 feet and string broke off with nothing sticking out. Opened up the part that holds the string and could not find the loose ends. They appeared to melt and weld themselves onto the bundle wrapped around the spool. Had to use needle nose to pull the ends loose. Tried again. Maybe 70 feet this time ...same problem. Even harder to break ends loose , had to cut them.. Pulled string out and put rhino string back in.. Going tony to return it.

    yeah works fine but....
I promise you it wprks fine has power last a decent amount of time. But safety glasses or safety shield or long sleeves you will be hurting either way because the shield or rockhard on this thing is so small that everything is going to hit you everything hits you and it goes in a counter clockwise spinning motion so everything is coming back at your forearms at your face your neck and your head.

      excellent machine
Just came in yesterday and finally got to try it out today. Its exactly as good as all of the reviews say and performs exactly as Dewalt claims. Really lightweight and one less engine to maintain. Plenty of power.

Does not bog down or loose power like most electric trimmers. Battery life is great. Battery also works in dewalt 20v ion drill and saw. Overall good product. Seems sturdy even for having a plastic head. Brushless design keeps it quiet too

This weedeater is perfect for my purpose and I'm sure it will be perfect for you as well
I already had a Ryobi electric weedeater and it was trash so I already had experience with electric weedeaters. I took a chance on it because it is dewalt and because I have been a big dewalt tool fan I already had 6 5AH batteries and 3 changers. I aas more than pleased with the performance of the tool. I used the high setting because it is a electric weedeater and I thought that the power of the tool would be less. I ended up rutting the yard so I just left it on the low setting. Don't use the smaller 2AH batteries because they won't have the longevity of the larger batteries and i have not used them so i don't know if it decreases the power of the Weedeater. It is light enough to use without strain over a long period of time. I didn't have to weedeat large weeds so I don't know the performance of the weedeater in that respect but for the yard work I do it is more than enough, I am happy with this tool.

Very disappointed in this one...It just doesn't do the job. I have had this string trimmer for about half of a lawn season. I have a very normal, suburban home. Typical driveway length, sidewalks, and about 5 small trees in the back. I can not trim this property without this thing shutting off...even when there is still battery power. I can only make it about halfway through my property before this thing cuts off. I can switch batteries, and that helps for a minute. I don't know if it is over heating or what. I even run it on the low power setting. It's spring, 75 degree weather, literal definition of beautiful day and it can't trim my yard. I have provided pictures of my property, its a small property, only 8,000 square feet. This $200 trimmer should be able to finish this type of property and I have never been able to get through it. I've probably uses this close to 25 times now and have not been satisfied yet. Oh yeah...It doesn't come with a shoulder strap! It's nice enough, its plug and play. Interchangeable batteries with all of my other Dewalt tools. I'm a huge fan of this brand and have many of their products. This is the first and only one so far that that has let me down.

uncomfortable and short-lasting. the battery is very difficult to remove. the angle at which it is made is very uncomfortable. Also, I have less than a year with it and I don't use it all the time, let's say I have used it for 25 to 30 times. and it already broke in the part where the line is placed.

Bought this 20 Volt Trimmer/Blower combo kit in June. Assembly was a breeze, a "cave man" could do it. Even though I've only used it 3 months I can tell this is the best tool I HAVE EVER USED. Can't say how it will hold up, but if it has the quality of my other Dewalt tools, I will be pleased for many years. I can't understand why I used the old gas trimmer so long. It does everything the gas trimmer does with so much more ease of operation. I have a very large "Homestead" to maintain, (3 city lots), and I like my lawn to be "manicured", not just mowed. I edge all the sidewalks, the driveway, along the street, and trim around several trees and the fence in back and around the house and flower beds. I replaced the factory trimmer head with the Oregon "Gator SpeedLoad Head", which fit perfectly. (See Photo) This is the best trimmer head out there. You can replace the cartridge in 30 seconds, honestly, and keep on trimming. No winding string, no tangles, just trimming! The blower is perfect for cleaning my garage, sidewalks and driveway. Not quite the force of my old gas blower, but well suited for most projects. Of course they are both quiet, compared to my old gas rigs. I can get out and work early in the morning and the neighbors don't complain. I have several Dewalt tools and I can honest say, Dewalt really showed themselves this time. I'm going for the chain saw next! By the way, for those folks who say you cannot edge with this trimmer, "hogwash". (Look at my photos) Just wear eye protection and long legged pants. I do anyway, have you seen my legs? (Photo not enclosed) If possible, I would give the trimmer 10 stars out of 5.

                7 point in average
i just love the 5h-20v battery strong as i need. and the design look really cool. but the guard of this strimer like nothing. it let all grass crum, soil, tiny rock flying back to my leg. The motor is weak, lack of power. that why they run longer. So, it is ok for a small house, less grass to take care.( less than 7,500 square feet)

If you are like me, you are likely skeptical of an electric trimmer. I live in the country and I have very tall thick weeds that I need to trim. I bought this DeWalt trimmer because I have several DeWalt 20v tools and I am impressed with all of them. I only took two before and after pictures, and I have only used it for about 30 minutes, but it should be noted this can cut thick tall grass. It is not everything that a gas trimmer is, but it is not far behind.

First, I like this trimmer. It runs quietly, is well balanced, and cuts well. So much easier to use than my gas powered trimmer, and cuts about the same. Now for the bad part, It came with pre-wound line, which has tangled each time I've used it (only three times so far), and the head has to be taken apart to untangle, and then reassembled to be re-wound. I am going to buy some new line and see if this will help. The line that came on the spool has taken quite a set. If new line works without tangling up, I will give this tool a five - if not, it will get very limited use. Hopefully, this will be like all my other battery powered Dewalt tools and it will turn out to be a reliable tool.

I've had this trimmer for about a month. Initial quality report is that this trimmer is an excellent purchase. It's quieter than the craftsman gas trimmer it replaced. I haven't used as much string as I did with my craftsman. The battery seemed to overheat while using it in my backyard on a hot day a couple of weeks ago. It died after using it for a while on tall grass along my fence. When I put it in the charger, the light came on that says Hot/Cold Delay. It hasn't done that since then, but it's something I will keep an eye on. I bought it because I'm having problems with a frozen shoulder and I couldn't pull start the Craftsman gas trimmer and it was heavier than the DeWalt. I have a brushless 20V Max XR Hammer Drill and a 20V Impact Wrench so I'm able to use the batteries interchangeably. I also like that there are 2 speed settings even though I've only used the low speed setting so far.

I was very hesitant to buy this because of the heavy duty trimming needed where I am in the Redwoods. I didn’t think a cordless trimmer was strong enough but I have 20v DeWalt tools and batteries already so I took a risk for $99. I bought the “tool only” and wow, I was very surprised by the power my two dinky 3ah batteries have in this trimmer. I had one battery on the charger and used the other switching off and pretty much used it all day without running low on battery. This trimmer can take abuse. It’s not like a little crappy trimmer you would expect in a cordless but once again, DeWalt surprised me. I will say that if you’re going to use this commercially, get two or three 5ah batteries. There was one point we’re I was in really heavy ferns and had to wait for my second battery to charge for about 15 minutes. Pros: No more gas cans. Neighbors like it because it’s quiet. Easy to handle. Cons: Need at least two 5ah batteries for heavy trimming. A little heavy using all day.

My wife and I both love this trimmer. Much lighter than a gas trimmer. Battery fully charges in less than an hour. We have the 5ah battery. We have a large perimeter of yard and garden edged with granite Belgian blocks. We trimmed the entire yard and still had one bar left on the batteries charge indicator. For edging lawn grass the slow speed is more than good enough. I assume that will increase the running time between charges.

This trimmer has great power, but the guard is completely inadequate. I'm used to getting grass on my boots and pant legs. This trimmer covered me in grass pretty much to my waist. I'm 5'6" so average height, not vertically challenged. It was very powerful, which made the debris throwing even worse, gravel actually ripped my pants. It also lets a ton of grass debris into the head area, which would require removing 4 screws to take off to clean each time. That is something DeWalt needs to fix, make the guard larger. See the size of it compared to my corded Black & Decker cheapo trimmer- big difference. Something that is not their fault but that factors in to me returning the trimmer is that the balance is not right. I even adjusted where the handle was located and it still didn't feel right. Too heavy for my shoulder and I wasn't getting a good angle of the head for trimming. Disappointing, I wanted to like this because my DeWalt drill/driver is great.

                          Good not Great
I have had this trimmer for 2 years now and it runs good, and it is nice to have cordless freedom on a trimmer. DeWalt didnt completely think this through though. The shield guard is very small and makes a mess of this quickly including yourself. Grass and weeds will cover you from your knees down. It can also pose a problem for flying rocks and debris with children and pets around. To replace the string/ reload, this is a horrible design and tedious to get to work right. They should just sell preloaded cartridges instead of the string. I will be selling mine and getting another brand with a larger shield and preloaded replacement strings. (Ego)

                            Better then expected!
I hesitated buying a battery powered trimmer but I'm a huge Dewalt fan so I took the plunge. Once again, they impressed me. Yes there's a slight loss of power, but it's still plenty strong enough for overgrown weeds. It's quieter, lighter, and has significantly less vibrations then my old gas trimmer. Not having to deal with gas mixtures is also a huge bonus. I get a good solid 45 minutes of run time with the provided battery. I would definitely recommend this to any homeowner with 1/4 to 1/2 acre lot. I would not expect it to hold up for a lawn care business. I will say that Dewalt just convinced me to buy the entire set!

I felt minimal loss of power, it is lighter, quieter, and has significantly less vibration. There is no more mixing of fuel, no more pull string, and ON/OFF on demand. In every way better! Dewalt truly set a standard with this one. I am buying the blower and hedge trimmer set after seeing this performance. Also, the batteries are interchangeable with my drill set, always a bonus. Great battery life!!

Best trimmer I have ever used.
I was a little weary about going electric after being raised on gas trimmers my whole life. Let me say that this is the most powerful, easiest trimmer I have ever used. The battery it comes with is a 5 amp battery that provides plenty of runtime and can usually do my yard on less than two full charges. This is not a problem for me as I have MANY Dewalt 20v batteries. No trying to start using a pull cord, no running out of gas and having to go to the store to buy more, I just go and grab a new battery. Just make sure you have a battery on a charger and you will be fine. Oh yeah, as far as actual trimming goes, powers through the thickest and toughest overgrown grass and weeds with ease.

                                GRASS EATER
DeWalt comes through again with a quality cordless product. The Weed Eater comes disassembled and is very easy to assemble, two bolts and a push button lock the shaft in place. The 20 volt model comes with a charger and a battery. The handle comes with two allen screws and an allen wrench that is used to put the holding handle on with, very simple. After assembling the weed eater and allowing the battery to charge to full capacity place the battery on the end of weed eater and you are ready to cut weeds. The string feed is a bump mechanism, and the string is like nothing I have used before. It seems like it has wire in it that makes it super strong. It chopps right through strong stalk weeds like a knife through butter. Battery life is long lasting for me to get my entire yard done. Good tool and no noise from a gas motor to rattle your ears. Good tool to have for a medium size yard.

                                Powerful even without gas
This string trimmer is great. It was shipped to me in the factory packaging and was easy to assemble. The upper pole assembly slides into the bottom and is temporarily held in place using a push button lock. Using the provided allen wrench you tighten two of the screws on the lower pole assembly to secure everything. Once tightened it feels very sturdy. The handle is installed using two allen screws as well. Once you have the handle mounted you can decide which position is most comfortable for you. Personally, I found the trimmer to be a little to front heavy so I loosened the handle's clamp and slid it down closer to the trimmer head. I also turned it slightly to the left since I am right-handed and will be using my left hand to hold the handle. I feel like this makes it a lot more comfortable to hold during the 10-15 minutes it takes for me to trim the grass around my small 75 x 100 property. The handle is foam padded and when you hold it the battery port kind of rests against the bottom of your forearm if it is set up properly. Makes it a lot more comfortable. The battery that comes with this trimmer is the 5 Ah version shipped with a 3/4 charge. After giving it a full charge I was able to trim around my entire yard and still have plenty of power left. The charger is the pretty basic Dewalt DCB115 which should be able to charge anything in the Dewalt 20v MAX lineup of tools. It will let you know if the battery is fully charged, charging, or if the battery pack is too hot/cold to charge. Nothing revolutionary here. The cutting swath is about 13" by way of two nylon strings. For me it was easily able to zip through grass and weeds. Having to wind two strings is kind of a pain but the performance is worth it. The included string is a twisted square shape which helps it to cut through the grass instead of tearing it like round string pretty much does. The strings are bump fed, so once you start running out you just give the trimmer head a bump against the ground and it feeds out more string. I prefer the bump fed string trimmers because I feel like the auto feed ones just waste a lot of string. The motor head is variable speed with a high and low speed setting. I feel like having two speed settings is kind of redundant when the speed can be controlled by how far you squeeze the paddle trigger. But they do work as advertised. Setting the speed setting to high allows the motor to run full out if the paddle trigger is fully depressed. Set the trimmer to low and you'll max out at a lower rpm even with the paddle trigger fully depressed. Speaking of paddle trigger, I'm glad Dewalt when with this style switch. It's easier and less fatiguing to squeeze the paddle trigger with two or three fingers than it is to squeeze a trigger with one finger. Before the trimmer can be activated though the safety paddle on top must be depressed as well. I like that the string guard is small. It kind of reminds me of the ones the pros have on their gas trimmers. It makes it easier to cut in along sidewalks, driveways, and walls by flipping the trimmer or turning it on its side. Most consumer trimmers have a huge guard that makes it difficult if not impossible. If there were a way to rotate and pivot the head for cutting in that would be great. As the trimmer head spins to a stop I can hear a weird rattling noise. I think it's normal though. Maybe some sort of clutch built into the head to prevent damage if it ever gets jammed up? I'm not sure, but I can reproduce the sound by spinning the head by hand. The bottom side of the battery port has a hooked piece of plastic that I found lets it hang off of a wire shelf nicely. You should be able to hang this sideways off of just about any type of wall hook. So far I really like this trimmer and hope it will withstand the test of time.

                                Nice
As battery operated lawn equipment goes this is by far one of the simplest to assemble pieces I have used. The Dewalt name goes into their design and feature of this string trimmer. Unbox connect two pole sections tighten sleeve and screw on handle with provided hex tool and your ready to go. Place fully charged battery in end of handle and go to work. Battery has charge indicator lights in battery to tell you how much juice is in it. Comes with trimmer string installed. Variable speed trigger. Very handy for typical home use.

                                Very easy to use!
If you hate mixing oil and gasoline, if you are tired of trimmers that are difficult to start and if you are tired of trimmer repair costs throw away your old gas trimmer and buy this battery operated trimmer. Assembly takes about five minutes. Charge the battery, assemble the few parts and you are ready to trim. I tried it out yesterday in our front yard. It trimmed extremely well for a battery trimmer. You can operate it at a low or height speed. If you have a lot to trim use the lower speed and the battery will last longer. We have a large yard and I did the whole front and the battery still had plenty of power left. It uses .080 line which is thinner than most gas trimmers but will get the job done. Only negative is the handle could be slightly longer for me. If you have .25 of an acre or less this will do the job! We have just under .25 acre and it has plenty of power to trim the whole yard! I am very impressed and I am not impressed easily!
