We designed the trim plate to cover any imperfections on the wall from removing your old thermostat. Make sure that the wall surface is flat and free of any dust build up or any particles left behind by your previous thermostat. The Nest Thermostat Trim Plate is only optional and sold separately, which is designed to cover any imperfections on the wall from removing your old thermostat, where you may need to cover up holes or marks left behind by your previous thermostat. It also includes a steel plate for installing the thermostat over an electrical box.

The battery drain suggests that your Nest Thermostat isn't getting enough power. Nest Thermostats get power from the wires of your heating and cooling system. There are cases where these wires can't deliver enough power to support the Nest Thermostat's features, as a result they start draining the batteries and may even disconnect from your Wi-Fi network. In such cases, installing a common(C) wire between your HVAC and Nest thermostats can resolve the battery drain problem. You may contact a Nest Pro technician for assistance with checking your system and installing a common (C) wire if needed.

Some possible causes of this are the following:
- The thermostat is being miswired.
- Possible need of C wire (if you don't have, for power sharing issue).

The Wi-Fi disconnection and power issues you have may be connected. Nest thermostats are designed to charge the battery with the power your system wires supply. If the system wires can't deliver enough power, the thermostat battery will start draining, and this results in your thermostat limiting its features such as Wi-Fi connection to preserve battery. The resolution may be to install a common (C) wire in your system to deliver constant power to the thermostat. The power resolution will also help fix the connectivity issue.
