First off, let me start off by saying that the Ryobi technical service representative I spoke to on 11/11/2019 was very short and rude to me. That being said, before you decide to by this trimmer/edger, ****please take the following information into consideration**** (which is why I spoke to Ryobi today to see if there is a work-around). The problem with this edger is the auto line function. It works, yes, however it ALWAYS works. In other words, EVERY TIME you stop the edger, the line automatically feeds one-quarter inch at a time. So if you are edging and the line does not need to extend, it gets cut off by the "line cut-off blade" on the underside of the guard. So what is happening is that you are WASTING line every time you stop the edger and restart it, if no line is required to be automatically fed out of the spool. This is a stupid design and Ryobi should redesign this feature. So dear Ryobi, if I'm not going through tough grass, and my line doesn't break off and I don't need to automatically extend the line, which then gets cut it off, this does nothing more than waste line. I guess if Ryobi includes 100 spools of line then I wouldn't care. But since this otherwise wonderful edger wastes line, I find it to be worthless and I'll go with another manufacturer. So, it's going back into the box and returning it promptly to Home Depot. Maybe whoever buys it on the 50% off table can use the savings to buy extra spools of line that this unit wastes.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this about 1 month ago and I am very surprised on how well it works it lost way more than its one-hour claim it last up to 4 hours for me I was able to cover a lot of my yard it trims really well I enjoy the fact that I can adjust the handle so I can hold it more comfortably.

This is my second Ryobi string trimmer - the first simply wore out from years of use. But I cannot recommend this second one. The good: Long battery life and .08" string results in lots of usage before recharging or a spool replacement is necessary. The bad: 1) The string cutter has been placed orthogonally to the handle such that it and the black plastic housing are constantly getting caught in the long grass. In other words, you cannot swing the head back and forth as you walk along. The cutter blade should have been located behind the motor and the plastic housing trimmed out of the way. 2) Part No. HM-310920001 "Plastic Slider w/ Metal Insert" is the magic little part that auto-feeds the string after the spinning reel has restarted. Because it is constantly engaging the reel as it starts and stops, it gets hammered relentlessly. Unfortunately, however, it seems to have been was designed with some very thin sections and made out of processed American cheese - it will break quickly. Has anyone at Ryobi ever heard of, say, A-L-U-M-I-N-U-M?

Very comfortable, easy to use trimmer. However, quality is not so much good. The biggest problem is jamming of string. I have changed different type of strings based on recommendations from Home Depot adviser. Recently bought new string produced specifically for Ryobi trimmers...Trimmer is NOT working completely due to jamming. How I can return it? it's less than 1 year and I have tried to contact Ryobi via phone or email. But no response up to now.

I absolutely love this weed eater! So easy to use, so light and much quieter than gas powered. The only complaint I have is the battery life. I use the weed eater on 4 lots once a week just trimming around the house & fence. Takes about 2 hours and I have 2 supposedly 4 hour batteries and 2 regular 18v batteries and it takes all 4 to do about half the job. But even with the battery changes the weed eater is just as good if not better than gas powered.

Instructions were not very clear. I had to watch many online videos to figure it out.

They let their backyard go unattended for several weeks and was filled with 3 foot weeds everywhere. This trimmer did the job. It took 2 hours, but luckily I had a spare battery from the blower of the same product line, which helped cover those 2 hours.

I just bought this and tried to use it for the first time. Read the manual. Got maybe 2 minutes of use and the string would not advance. This is the ORIGINAL OUT OF THE BOX ALREADY WOUND STRING, and it was binding up in the spool. I fixed it, got 3 feet of edging and it bound up again, got 2 more feet and it bound up again, then it did it again and again and again. After 15 VERY FRUSTRATING minutes, I undid the spool and re-wound it, but that did not help. THIS SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE. IT IS A BAD DESIGN. IT CONSTANTLY BINDS AND IS UNUSABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now have to find a way to get my MONEY BACK AS THIS IS A USELESS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would post a video, but this sight is lame as it requires you to use You Tube, I DONT DO YOU TUBE. This site needs to post and hold its own videos, not expect You Tube to do it for them. More lame action from Roybi. You cant even post the 6 pics at one time, have to do it one at a time. How lame!

Recently bought this to replace problematic gas-powered string trimmer. Like the swiveling head to do edge trimming. Battery power is good; the 4.0 Ah battery seems to give about 45 min to 1 hr service, and recharges fairly quickly. Two speed control is helpful - low speed for normal cutting, high speed for heavy, deep grass or weeds. There are two snap-on plastic blade cutters also included if primary use will be heavy work. So all positive? Mostly, but it's heavy. Not impossibly so, but after 20 minutes I was ready for a quick break. Some manufacturers have developed powerful battery units that are smaller and lighter than Ryobi, but their price is often 3x higher. After 3 weeks, I'm pleased with the performance of the Ryobi trimmer. My lawn looks far neater than it has in years. And hey! No gas-powered noise. (Bonus: I can use the charger for any of my 18 volt Ryobi tools.)

I liked that this is a trimmer/edger unfortunately it has some issues when used as an edger. Mine is now 1yr 3mos old (3 yr warranty) and the eyelet where the string comes out is worn so now when used as an edger it puts to much stress on the line and it breaks off at the eyelet after edging about 2 feet every time. I would recommend this if being used as a trimmer but not as an edger. By the way if you dont live near a warranty center which I dont you can have Home Depot ship it for repairs but you must pay a $18.95 diagnostic fee and they told me it takes a minimum of 6 weeks to get repaired and shipped back. Unfortunately I cant wait that long so basically the 3 year warranty is no value add for me.

I have owned Ryobi for years and keep going back to this brand for Drills, Recip Saw's, circ. saws, etc. the bat line for small and med batt is great!. I easily get multiple full yard trims out of one charge. I tool one star away for this style because the foot latch and plastic housing a a bit flimsy and hard to rotate into edger mode. but with some hand help it does lock well and does a great job edging light grass and walkways.

Bought this in winter after I went a little nuts with my Ryobi one plus conversion from another brand. Didnt use it until after the return period or I would have returned it in favor of the one with the double string feeder. The edging feature is pretty nice but adds weight. The trimmer has grown on me as I thought the line would only last a couple trims due to the auto feed feature that advances the line about every time you pull the trigger. I find myself holding the variable speed trigger slightly as to keep it running between different areas of my yard that need trimming. It does a good job overall and the edging feature is nice. The kit is on sale now for $10 cheaper than I got and comes with the 4mah lithium plus battery and charger. Hope thos helps.

Product has some assembly but easy. I was impressed with its power. I chose this unit because I have other Ryobie tools and batteries in case the job needed a second battery but one was sufficient. The edging also worked better than I thought it would .

I love the versatility of switching between the two, but the weed whip works amazing I have no problems other than I don’t like the trimmer sets that come with it I just use the traditional cord to cut the weeds. Very nice machine and I can do more than my own yard before that battery needs to be charged again. Plus I like that all these batteries are interchangeable with my drill and whatever else I purchase down the road.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The 4Ah battery is perfect for the trimmer. It edges very nice, and is easy to switch from trimmer mode to edger. It is kinda hard to switch back to trimmer mode. You get the most out of your battery if you operate in short bursts. However, a huge downside is that the trimmer line feeds out every time you stop then start. It wastes string faster, not to the point that you load string weekly, but faster than a bump head feed. My yard looks great and I have a fairly large yard!

Just got 13"cordless string trimmer/edger. The last one lasted 3 years

Then I seen the RYOBI and I thought about my first cordless drill that I bought. So I said "hey why not get me a trimmer just like my drill". So guess what I did and I never looked back when I trim, thank you RYOBI.

This is probably the best trimmer I've had the pleasure of using. I put it through some pretty huge brush yesterday after letting the weeds and grass in certain spots of my property get way out of hand; I'm talking 3-4 feet tall in some cases. After a quick assembly and battery charge I took this fella out for a spin and it made short work of everything it came in contact with. It packs a ton of power and was even cutting through thin twigs of wood fairly easily with just the string. I tested out the edger feature by stepping on the brake lever with my foot, switching the head to it's side where it has a wheel to let you roll it on the edge of your driveway or sidewalk etc, and it did a beautiful job of cutting a crisp edge right down my driveway. I love this trimmer! It also took care of all my needs on a single charge.

Received this on Wednesday 7/5, other than the labeling and plain brown box (and the letters RECON heat-stamped on each component) one would not know it was "reconditioned". The trimmer, battery and charger all look like new--and as I have found over the last couple days all perform like new as well. The included battery is Ryobi's P108 4.0 Ah (72 Wh) pack, the charger is their P118 (50 W input) unit. Once the upper and lower units were joined and the battery inserted it was all set to go. The battery was fully charged as received and the trimmer was loaded with a full spool of bright green 0.080" twisted line--which BTW is some pretty tough stuff. Out of the box the supplied 4.0 Ah battery powered it for 40 minutes or so of actual runtime with a more or less 50/50 split of low and high speed use--mostly trimming with a 25 foot or so run of edging toward the last--at that point the tool was still able to trim light grass, the battery was down to 1 bar on the power meter. During this session the unit consumed about 1/4 of the included line. It charged up in my existing P117 (85 W input) charger in a bit over two hours. On Thursday I used it with a 4.5 Ah (81 Wh) "PowerExtra" aftermarket battery I purchased via Amazon a few months back (BTW I highly recommend this battery it is a near steal at $36). The trimmer ran 30 minutes almost continuously while doing some rather heavy trimming around the perimeter of our two+ acre lot--cutting both tall sturdy grass and maple/oak saplings. The aftermarket battery was down to 1/4 charge when I was finished. About 1/2 of the remaining line was used, this 0.080" twisted line is some impressive stuff. Overall I like it, it's almost better than "Cats"...
