Buy the model with NO auto shut off!
Installation was a breeze, taking 2 hours with hot water 45 minutes later. Super efficient, using only 1/6th of what my old unit needed. Love it! My problem is w/the auto shut off valve. It randomly shuts off the water. The app does not permit you to reset the valve - you have to clear the error manually. Tired of messing with it I removed the auto shutoff module and unplugged the thermocouple. Buy the other one without the auto-shutoff and save yourself $200.

    Already saving money! The app tracks it!
    Saved $800 at checkout with Maryland rebate by phone! Already running at only ~0.5-0.75kwh per day. Also, Ignore any comments about the heat pump noise. A small fan runs and you hear some compressor noise. We have a small boiler room that is across the hall from a bedroom. The louvered door required for this HW heater means some noise gets through. We completely mitigate that by setting the heating schedule with the wifi app to stop at 10PM and turn on at 7:00AM. Wakey wakey!

      The water heater works well and appears to operate with very low use of electricity. It weighs around 200 lbs. so is somewhat difficult to lift into position, especially if using a catch basin to direct away any leakage, since this requires lifting over the edge of the basin. I had to set up a lifting hook and winch. There are no obvious lift points since the water inlet and outlet are not on top where plumbing points are typically used for lifting. I used a strap around the heater that worked ok except that it tilted making the lift a bit more difficult. Plumbing inlet and outlet points require additional plumbing due to not being on top. I recommend using flex connections to allow for easily running pipes at odd angles. The pressure relief valve on my water heater would not seal and continued to leak water requiring me to get another valve before I could use the water heater. I had some argument with Home Depot about replacing the valve. At first, they told me I needed to replace the water heater to which I protested that this was extremely labor and time intensive. Eventually, they gave me credit for a replacement valve. My water heater is located in my garage in Florida, which is ideal since the garage is normally quite warm and the heater does provide some cooling. The extra noise from the hybrid compressor is not an issue in this location and I have not found it to be excessive. I would give five stars if not for the installation difficulty and the faulty relief valve. I had a previous hybrid heater where the condenser apparently corroded inside the tank, disabling the hybrid operation, although it still worked as an electric heater using the heating elements. I also found that our water leaves huge calcium deposits and I will now start draining water from the tank regularly to hopefully eliminate this build up. I'm still leery of possible corrosion of the condenser. There seems to be no provision or recommendation to change the anode, which strikes me as strange.

      Unreliable
      I have purchased and installed two identical units. The first unit I have had no issues with. The Second has had constant problems. When the unit first arrived, one of the refrigerant lines vibrated incredibly loudly. This concerns me as it indicates the unit was not tested. The unit is in hear pump mode, however the electric heating element keeps coming on for apparently no reason. The only way to turn on the heat pump is to power off the unit.

        Heat pump failure
        We had this hybrid heat pump installed in our new how to save cost over the long haul. Problem is the heat pump failed after only 3 years. Now we can only operate it full electrical mode. Might as well bought a much cheaper electric water heater!!

          Better than oil !
          I have a wantless oil boiler for domestic hot water and base board heat. I was tired of spending money on oil throw out the summer and where I live the electric bill is dirt cheap since we have our own plant. Regular electric water heaters are cheap to buy but expensive to operate. The initial cost plus $500 rebate I got for this item was a no brainer! I currently use 2-3kw per day. It’s been running for 2 weeks and barely 1in of water in my bucket. Slow to initial heat up but great otherwise!

            Greatest investment
            Absolutely love this hot water heater. The energy savings along with cost and return on investment was by far well worth it. Yes it cost a bit more upfront but it pays for itself with the energy savings and the rebates from utility company and tax incentive. Completely satisfied with the purchase and I would tell everyone who’s looking for a new heater and on the fence about what to get, get this. I did the research web wide, consumer reports and website and Rheem is the way to go.

            Very noisy
            I’m actually considering throwing this out and buy the A O Smith hybrid water heater. I have had this running for around 4 months and it is extremely noisy at 65 decibels, it should be around 45 decibels. I am going to contact Rheem to see if they have come up with a fix and if not I’ll probably have to do something else. It does work good. It’s just really loud.

              So far, so good.
              Install was fairly straight forward. I’m eager to see if the hyped efficientcy equates into real savings. I’m a little concerended on how long it took the WH to recover to a full tank of hot water after a shower but like many have stated in various Youtube videos there is a degree of programability and tuning that needs to take place to reach full potential. That is currently a work in in progress.

                Broken from the start!
                We just installed a brand new Rheem hybrid water heater, purchased from Home Depot. That same Sat. night, the alarm kept going off and giving us code A004. I called a Rheem tech Monday morning and he had me push some buttons and read him some numbers…he ended up Fed-Exing us 3 new thermistors (although the unit has 4), a YouTube video, and a diagram which doesn’t really match our unit. My husband just spent about an hour replacing the wires and now we have 3 alarm codes! I’m beyond frustrated.

                  Works as expected but you will need to rework supply lines if you're replacing a traditional unit.
                  Unit works as expected, just waiting to see if energy savings is as promised. It's been installed for almost a month and definitely produces hot water. Just got Econet up and running a few days ago thank to their tech support line. I had to add a wifi extender unit in order for it to link up and it does now. I like the info and controls the app provides.

                  Hybrid Water Heater - excellent purchase
                  WiFi set up is not intuitive. Might have to watch a YouTube video to figure it out. Otherwise, completely satisfied with unit delivery to house and operation after installed. If you've never had a hybrid water heater, this is basically a heat pump and regular water heater. It is bottom fed, so code requirements include an air gap and condensate drain line similar to your HVAC unit. Phone app allows you to set schedules or change from economy to high demand with a touch of a button. Easy to use. Supposed to save 30% in energy per year. Local utility and Federal tax rebates available, too.

                  Best Energy Upgrade We've Done
                  This is one of the best home upgrades we have done in the past several years. We installed new triple pane windows and although we love them, didn't see any discernible difference in our electric bill. Same with LED lighting, energy star appliances, etc. After installing this water heater our bill dropped by nearly $100 per month. On top of that, during the summer it does a great job of cooling and drying the air in our basement and has kept the area nice and dry (and mold free). Recommended!

                    Getting random error code after 1 month use
                    Its saves electricity bill but it might end up cost more. After 1 month use I'm getting A125 and A126 code. Looks like something stuck, it just keep heating up until it error out. Had to turn off power for 5 mins in order to clear the alarm. I'm not sure how long this unit will last.....

                      AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
                      Purchased a gen 4 Hybrid Water Heater less than two years ago. It's out of labor warranty but still within the 10 year tank and part warranty. Tech support helped me diagnose that the control board is bad. The part is on backorder for 3 months. Rheem will replace the unit but I have to cover the $450 labor charge to swap it out. I will be scrapping this unit and sticking with a standard Brandford White unit. Any energy savings you have will be eclipsed by replacing the unit in 2 years!

                        AFTER 1-YEAR THE VERDICT IS IN!----HAPPY SO FAR
                        Installed 1yr ago today, used 1052KW to heat wtr to 130-deg.(setback to 110--4pm and 6am) 2021 consumption was 3684KW with standard elec tank. $131.50 vs $460.50 I monitor electric consumption with Emporia Energy Monitor on main electric panel. Unit is installed in our garage, I feel it would be too noisy to be installed in the house. I would recommend installing a point of use surge protector as an added level of protection from power surges

                          I'm liking it. Don't cheap out on the installation and do it right.
                          This model had the best reviews and performance specifications. It installed and started without issue. We are meeting our hot water needs and averaging less than 3 KWH / Day! It had plenty of hot water for 2 back to back showers. I measured by shower head rate and it's 1 gallon per minute so this is no surprise. All in all, so far we are very happy with this unit.Considering rebates and installation costs it will be paid for in less than 3 years. Maybe less depending what heating oil prices do. I have retired an oil fired hot water boiler with a tankless coil. For the last 3 years we have been heating the living space with heat pumps and the furnace was just doing the domestic hot water, so we know that consumption, .6 gallons per day. Downsides and things to know? The intelligence of the unit was a disappointment. It relies on only 2 temperature sensors to manage the heating. Since heat pump recovery is slower than conventional electric heating it would be nice to begin heating sooner. You could enter bath time with something less than 50 gallons. The sensors are thermistors so they should be able to detect some subtle changes and second guess a little. This hasn't been an issue for us so far but with a background in machine control this is a crude system. I'm sure that the next generations will bring changes. The lack of resolution in temperature sensing causes the AP to have a very crude depiction of available hot water. It heats water by taking heat energy from the room. It does blow cold air. It does not belong in a closet, it needs air. It's in my basement. Being in Maine and heating with heat pumps I will need to make some winter choices. I can let the heat pump warm the basement and then let the water heater concentrate some of that energy. I can also switch to the electric or mixed electric compressor modes to limit the basement chilling. I'm geeking out here! In the cooling process, like an air conditioner it discharges condensate (water). You will need a drain to run this to. For this me, in my basement this meant adding a condensate pump. The Little Giant condensate pump is doing well. The drain is above the tank, below the heat pump module. You can download the manual with dimensions. There is some sound. Less than most air conditioners, more than a basic box fan. It's a "white noise" but the compressor and fan do add up. It's in my basement where I don't care. I strongly suggest including a (Watts) mixing valve. This lets you run the heater a little warmer without a scald risk. This extends your tank capacity a little, while delivering a steady temperature. I heat to 125F and mix to 118F at my farthest point of use. Include ball valves to permit mixing valve inlet screen cleaning. I am in heat pump only mode. The default temperature setting in the AP is a slider. This is very easy to inadvertently change. If you don't have a mixing valve it's a major scald risk. Go into "General Settings". Under "Set Point Control" change it to the second option, individual button presses. Include flexible inlet and outlet lines. First, they simplify alignment. Second, they limit vibration transmission to your plumbing and the rest of the house. Third, they provide an easy means of disconnecting the unit when needed. You do not want to hard pipe everything such that you need to cut things later. Insulate your pipes to save heat and prevent condensation. Set things up so nothing will drip on the water heater, it's more sophisticated than an old restive heater. Be sure to keep clear top access to service the air filter.

                          Rheem has abandoned the app; water turns cold fast
                          The water heater (80 gallons, on energy saving) doesn't keep up with my 1 person household. Water turns cold after 11-15 minute shower. Temperature is set at 130°. The app leaves much to be desired. Seems like Rheem has abandoned the app and hasn't updated it since June 2021. Also, the app is stuck on some weird setting that's supposed to show the water temperature (see picture). I don't recommend this water heater at all.

                            I would give it 5 stars, but the first one...
                            I would give it 5 stars, but the first one that I installed was defective. After installing it, it had a very high pitched noise, like a ringing in my ear. I contacted Rheem and they had me record the decibel levels and record the actual sound. I emailed these to Rheem and they said it is a sealed unit and it was not repairable. They told me to go back to my installer and have them install a new one and return the defective one to HD. They offered to pay for the removal and re-install. Now that the second one is installed, I am very happy with it. It is not silent like a standard water heater because the compressor and fan make a sound, but it's not loud. I love how little energy it uses. I use it only in the heat pump mode. The app was a little tricky to get set up on my phone, but now it works flawlessly.

                            Expensive up-front but the savings pay for itself
                            This water heater is expensive up-front, but you will easily save $300 or more every year compared to natural gas. Given the 10-year warranty (which Rheem stands by), this unit will *make* you money over its lifetime. For comparison, last month at 110F cost about $4. Note that you will need to have an electrician run a 240V/30A line to a disconnect and then a whip to the water heater. The Android app is terrible. Most of the time, it cannot connect and is unable to control the water heater.

                                No more heating oil
                                Just completed installing my new hybrid water heater. No more oil for me. Using mini splits to heat and cool my house and now this hybrid water heater for hot water. Turned off the boiler. Took a while to get as the shipping company damaged the first one. Hopefully it’s as good as it says.

                                  I've had this unit for 6 months and it's been great so far! Just be aware that you'll need to connect it to a drain line. It creates condensation like an air conditioner that has to drain somewhere. Also be aware that it's a good bit heavier than a regular water heater so bring a friend to help install it. I'm excited about the long term cost savings.

                                    Things to know.
                                    1) Heat pump is very noisy. Anyone contemplating putting this in a living area (closet) will not appreciate how loud the buzzing noise is. 2) Comes without the condensate plumbing, which is essential to install otherwise condensate will dribble out the hole (you need to get some PVC see pic). 3) Temp. is pre-set at 120° which is standard. The hottest unmixed hot water that comes out the faucet one floor above the heater is only 111.4°. This is NOT standard. 4) Did I get a lemon?
