    Decent water heater BUT
I'll have to admit, I was super excited when we purchased this water heater and had it installed. It worked great from November to March. This month we have been receiving error codes every afternoon. EcoNet Alert - A005 Heat Pump Water Heater Gen 5 Compressor Shutdown: Discharge Temp High and a Hardware Alarm. The unit itself is set to Energy Saver mode. I have called Rheem twice and still to do this no one can give me an answer to what's wrongs. The installer isn't familiar with the units, so thats also a dead end. I was told this unit works efficiently between 40-145 degrees. Yet once the outside temperature nears 70 degrees we seem to get these errors. Any help from Rheem would be greatly appreciated.

      Noisy
I do believe there would be a significant cost savings over the long term, but we will likely be paying a plumber to move it. The unit sits in our garage, but we can hear it through about half the house. The noise is not just fan noise which would be ok, but there is a definite hum.

        great efficient water heater
been running this hybrid 50 gal for 10days now. according to the app energy use is super impressive . with 3 people each taking one shower per day this unit on eco mode os using about 2.5 kw in each 24 hr period. used 27kw in 9 days thats 3$ in electricity. on that note its awesome verse a standard 4500watt unit. little confused on why the water input port is at almost the front of the unit and the hit output is about 45 degrees to the left of it makes no sence to me. made install harder as trying to put it in spot witout running a bunch of piping the should have been adjacent to each other on the side or rear. the fan does put out cold air so keep that in mind. prob be great in the summer. i love the wifi app for phone. very easy to use.

My first review wasn't good due to receiving a defective unit. I've now have the second water in service for three weeks and it is working great. The heater, set at 126, is providing adequate amounts of hot water. I'm impressed with the low electric usage. According to the ECONet app it has used less than 10Kwh over the last 6 days. Of course there is only one person using hot water in my house so that helps. So far, I'm very pleased with the water heater. I'm hoping it will prove to be a reliable unit and a good investment. Time will tell.

This is great water heater with only one thing that's really upsetting
The water heater works as expected, installation is not complicated (only it weights more than standard water heaters). But I'm giving one start to this item because I set water heater mode to "Heat Pump", and still it's engaging resistance heating elements that are using 3Kw+ of energy. Causing huge power consumption. I would expect that heater would run the only heat pump in "Heat Pump" mode.

Bought this to replace a GE Geospring hybrid water heater that was about 10 years old. Only had the water heater installed for a few weeks now. Installed the water heater myself. Everything went smoothly except for 3 things. 1st, when the manufacturer installed the automatics shut off value, it leaked, this was Rheem's connection, not mine. I was able to tilt the water heater back a bit while tightening the value about an 1/8 of a turn. It ended up stopping the leak. The 2nd issue was that in the process of switching out the water heater, some water got on the floor. Well, this water heater has a automatic shut off vale when it detects water on the floor, so the automatic shut off kept closing. There doesn't seem to be an override on the display on the water heater itself. This brings me to the 3rd issue, I had some trouble setting up the app. I could not get it to work on my android phone at first and so I tried my wife's iphone. I got it to work on the iphone and them my android app started to work. There was a shut off value override in the app. It would have been nice to have an override on the water heater itself. Overall, I'm happy with the water heater. Hopefully I won't have any issues for a long time. I currently have the condensation drain just draining into a bucket. I'm contemplating whether to drill a hole in my wall for the condensation drain.

"Great Investment and Very Easy to Install"-Do not pay a plumber to install-DIY.
Just got through installing a RHEEM performance platinum hybrid water heater 50 gal. (Model #XE50T10H45U0) with Shark bite attachments to the top copper fittings connected via Pex for a very easy install. Home Depot wanted $825 to install, another local plumber $425. I followed this video on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASJYZS92-Bo&t=687s) with my (Pex materials, clapping, etc.) parts costing around $100 and installed myself with help from my son-Two people make it much easier. Home Depot price for Rheem water heater was $1,299, Subtotal, Discount -$600.00 (on Sale on slickdeals via Home Depot) Shipping $75.00, FL Sales Tax $50.31, Order Total $824.31, Utility rebate -$500=$324.31+ $100 above parts $424.31 TOTAL PRICE, Not bad, Cannot wait for the summer months here in Orlando, Florida to see if this unit will cool down my Non-Air Conditioned Garage.

My plumber had never put one of these in before, so it took him awhile, but he got it. We have had it a couple months now, and really like it. It has very good capacity for hot water and we keep it about 112°. The only thing I don't like is when I put it in vacation mode, it doesn't stay there. It switches back to normal. So I just turn it down as low as it will go. The app is also pretty worthless. It also does not keep it at whatever I change it to. But other than that I am extremely happy with it! If I could figure out how to fix those issues, I would give it 5 stars.

Best home efficiency investment ever! Replaced a past end-of-life oil-fired 50 gallon water heater that burned a gallon a day ($2.00) for domestic hot water with a new 65 gallon Proterra that consumes LESS THAN 2 kWh ($0.35). Finding the right installer was important, but the unit went in easily. Minting savings as I review this!

Have had unit for about two weeks and it works perfectly. Bought partly because it fit perfectly in the tight space where my electric unit had been due to diameter being the same. Would have liked 60 gallon version but it would not fit. Have been running it in heatpump mode only, instructions are a little confusing as it says the most efficient mode is hybrid mode and app keeps asking me to switch, but that is false. In heat pump only mode it is most efficient but some might have problems with recovery as heatpump only is slow to recover. We only have two people in the home so there is no problem with two showers and dishwasher and washing machine. Energy usage is at or below the estimated $104 in electric per year versus the same DOE sticker on my old electric which was $565 a year. The only thing I don't like is both the display on the unit and the app show the setpoint temperature but not the actual temperature, but not a big deal. The data from the app is very useful. I have the unit installed in my Florida garage. That area is quite warm in the summer so I expect it to use even less energy then, and the unit will also provide some cooling of the garage. Those in a northern climate may have to use the hybrid mode as the incoming water temperature is probably much lower and this size unit might not be big enough in just heatpump mode especially in the winter.

The Rheem heat pump water heater works great right from the install I have a utility room that gets a little warm because of the radiant floor heating. MISLEADING SIZE ACTUALLY ONLY 45 GAL
The actual tank capacity of this hot water tank is only 45 Gallons. Say so on side of it under energy ratings. The way the do it is advertise it as 50 gallons nominal. Definition of nominal: 1. in name only; · 2. minimal in comparison

Setup is mostly like a regular heater. So far I'm running in the engery saver mode and my basement is staying nice and cool. I may setup a vent to dump the cool air outside during the winter months. First full month was 91 kwh and second month will probably be a little higher since it's at 87 Kwh and there is 7 days left. Usually we average between 2 and 4 Kwh per day. There are 4 of us here and we work at home so water gets used all the time. I believe I should save between 20 and 30 dollars a month compared to my old water heater. App works pretty good too.

I haven't owned this product long enough to comment on reliability. I previously owned an older version of this product, which failed after six years. Rheem replaced it under warranty. The new unit appears to be of much higher quality, and I hope that whatever caused my earlier unit to fail has been corrected. The newer unit was more expensive; I had to pay and additional $380. It is very quiet, not louder than a refrigerator. It is amazingly efficient. It draws only 350 watts! You can select modes of operation via Wi-Fi. If you expect high demand, you can combine resistive heat with the heat pump. You can disable it while on vacation.

not for everyone - you need soundproofing or enclosed area away from house
I have never been so excited about a product and so disappointed once it was installed. I suspected it was gimicky and it is. You will never use the hybrid portion because your wife will not put up with the noise. I purchased this instead of using storage tank on oil furnace. I thought furnace would be too loud (52db for System 2000). Sure, I would accept the noise of a low CFM fan, but that's not what you get, you'll get a high-pitched and low pitch whine (it changes if you push on control panel, showing just bad design, vibrating parts and its not even the fan itself perhaps). measured 75db from 10-12 inches. So if you don't mind a sound as loud as a vacuum cleaner running in your house, 24/7 for hot water and you were looking forward to getting a divorce soon then go ahead buy this thing.

This hybrid saves over $400 a year in energy use, will pay for itself in less than 5 years. It also helps cool my garage while saving me that money.
I installed this 80 gallon Rheem Hybrid Smart water heater myself 189 days ago (April 10, 2020.) I have been so impressed with how little energy it uses. Using the app on my phone I can see a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly energy consumption. I can also change the water temperature and turn off my water heater where ever I am in the world using my phone. Of course since I live in Florida and my garage is usually about 88 degrees or hotter, this hybrid is able to convert the heat in the ambient air to use for heating my water, and when it is doing that it blows out cool air into the garage, which is now around 10 degrees cooler which helps a lot when I have to do any work in the garage. I can't wait to see how much energy it will use in the next 6 months. I would imagine the colder climate it is the less efficient it is, but if you live in the south I recommend this as a no brainer. My old water heater energy-guide sticker showed an annual energy cost of $544, the hybrid water heater energy-guide sticker showed $161 a year both are using 12 cents per kilowatt hour. If you look at my usage so far for 189 days (See Photo) I have used a total of 241.45 kilowatt hours that if you double that number to show one years use, my usage would be about 483 kilowatt hours per year. If you multiply 483 hours at an average of 12 cents per kilowatt hour it comes to $57.96 for the year, which is less than $5 a month for 80 gallons of hot water. If you subtract the Hybrid water heater annual cost of $58 from my older water heater annual cost of $544 it would mean this saves me about $486 a year, or after 4 years it would save me $1944, more than I paid for the water heater and all the parts to install it. and it would have 6 years still to go while under warranty. And I have noticed my electric bill compared to last year has dropped about $30 to $40 a month since I installed it. If my next house doesn't have a hybrid, I will replace it right after I move in, because I know it will pay for itself in a few years. Buying a regular water heater will save you $500 to $1000 that day. But if you look at annual cost for both water heaters for the next 10 years and add the purchase price you will see which one really costs more. My old one would cost $5400 in energy plus $1000 for the water heater. Compare that to the energy sticker for the hybrid which equals about $1610 in energy plus $2000 for the hybrid. $6400 minus $3610 and this cost at least half of the regular water heater. I have never installed a water heater before, I watched a few YouTube videos and decided I would try it myself. It took me about 1 hour to drain and remove the old water heater, and about 4 hours to modify my plumbing to attach to this new configuration. If you look at the pictures it shows the old water heater pipes cold and hot were on the top of my old water heater, where the Hybrid heater has the Hot in the front a few inches above the ground and the cold water connected on the side a few feet above the ground. I decided to use metal flexible tubing so the next time I replace it it will be easy to disconnect and be able to slide the water heater in and out as needed. I will check back next April to update this review after a year.

Exactly 1 year in and savings are exactly what was advertised...$400
I installed this amazing 50 gallon water heater myself 1 year ago today. I attempted to have it installed by a local plumber, but the 3 I contacted were not familiar with hybrid water heaters and tried to talk me into buying a conventional style. One actually said, "Why would you spend twice as much for something that's going to last half as long?" That's when I decided to buy the PEX tubing and Shark Bite fittings I would need to complete the install myself. It wasn't very difficult at all. I even cut a hole through the wall to draw consistent 70+ degree air from my laundry room. This helps in the winter since mine is installed in my garage. Well after 1 year, it has consumed a total of 1003 kWh of electricity. At 11.4c/kWh, this is about $115. My old unit was estimated @ $514/year, so this water heater has a ROI of 4 years! It'll even pay for the next one before the 10 year warranty expires. I've played with the heating modes a bit and found "Energy Saving" works best for me. It will automatically kick in the electric heating elements as needed to prevent you from running out of hot water, which WILL happen with rare high demand situations. I would highly recommend this Rheem Heat Pump Water Heater to anyone who's considering replacing their unit, as well as those who aren't.

                      Very low cost for usage
My local HD had this on sale for $999. I used a 10% off coupon and saved another $100. Also my local EMC offered a $150 rebate for installing a heat pump water heater. So final price was $750 + tax and some plumbing supplies . Very easy to install. Replaced the original 50 gal electric that was 14 years old. That one's yellow sticker said 4900 kwh's per year. This new one per it's usage report has used 50 kwh's the first month, so probably 600 per year. Unit will pay for itself in two years. It's just two of us but I've seen no difference in the hot water keeping it on heat pump only.

As Represented; Great for Florida Garage
I installed the unit this morning into our Florida garage, replacing an aging old water heater. Installation was straight forward and everything was accessible and easy to plumb/connect. I was shocked at how fast the "heat pump" only heated the water. Even more shocking was how nicely it cooled off the garage (which is not under air) and dehumidified the space. I measured the water it took out in the first hour of operation and it was at least a quart. This is a splendid addition to a space that often is hot and humid (with a nasty impact on tools). We looked at solar and with the cost and added benefit of cooling and dehumidifying, this was the only way to go. The APP was easy to set up and is easy to use, giving incredible access to programming and timing to maximize efficiency. The cost is high but appears to be well worth the cost. It is way too early to judge the longevity and long term quality, but so far, could not ask for more.

I installed it in less than a hr on my own works well wish the fan was a little quiter. My house is 2 family so 4 to 6 showers a day + dishes and such works vary well. Also the heat pump sucked all the moisture out of the basement so no need for a dehumidifier

                            Very efficient, consider placement
My house has 3 electric water heaters and my electric usage for hot water was quite high. Every night when the kids took a bath I would see a 2 Kwh spike in my electricity usage. I spent many many months researching heat pump water heaters before making the jump given the high cost. I replaced two of the units which are older and supply all the bathrooms and laundry with two 50 gallon rheem hybrid units, the 2020 proterra model without the automatic shut off valve. I hired a plumber to install them. It took quite a bit of work to find someone to install them for a reasonable price. Many plumbers I reached out to asked for $1200-$1500 in labor to install each unit which is outrageous. This largely stems from lack of familiarity with the units. I ended up using a local plumber off next door that did the install off hours and charged me $300 per unit which is much more reasonable. I have very little experience plumbing but after watching them installed, I would feel comfortable with DIY using pex and shark bite. Compared to a regular water heater, these have the cold water inlet at the bottom and hot water outlet out of the side. There is also a condensate line that has to be connected. Otherwise it is straight forward. There is also a filter at the top in the heat pump which requires 6-8 inches of clearance above to remove and clean. If there is not a nearby drain for the condensate line, a condensate pump is required. I moved one of the heaters to the opposite side of an unfinished room in the basement so the condensate could be routed directly outside without needing a pump. With regard to the operation of the units themselves, I am overall quite pleased with them. I am running them on pure heat pump mode and we have seen a marked drop in our electricity usage. we are using on average 10 kwh a day. On start up I set them to heat pump mode , each unit ran for about 2-3 hours and used 2 kwh of power to bring the full tank up to 120 degrees. We take probably on average 4-5 showers/baths a day and run 1-2 loads of laundry. The econet app is great and lets you monitor usage. Total between the two units we are using about 3-3.5 kwh a day with them set at 120 on heat pump only mode. This is August in Georgia. They are located in the basement where ambient temps right now are around 70 degrees. It seems each unit uses about .3- .5 kwh a day to maintain the ambient temperature and about .35 kwh after each shower or load of laundry. This is very efficient, probably 4x as efficient as my old resistance electric water heater (these units have an efficiency rating of 3.75 which is what I am seeing). Both units are in the basement. One an an unfinished room and the other in a finished area in a closet with double louvered doors and an unfinished ceiling. The units are not as quiet as I would have hoped. When the heat pump is running they sound like an old refrigerator. This is not a big deal with the unit in the unfinished basement. We can't hear it running upstairs or in the other parts of the basement with the doors shut. For the unit in the closet in the finished basement, it's quite noticeable when running. I think the sound in that room is being amplified by the walls and the lack of ceiling. With this unit there is a bedroom next to it and even with the door closed you can hear it. It sounds like someone left an old bathroom fan running. Not a deal breaker for us since the basement is not heavily used and the unit only runs periodically, but when we have guests it's loud enough that I would consider taking that particular one off heat pump mode. When running they do blow off cold air , but in a large space they do not lower the temperature significantly. I was hoping they would dehumidify the basement but I have not seen a meaningful drop in humidity. Something else to consider, per the manual these are not recommended if you have a recirculating pump. I think because the recovery time on heat pump mode is so slow that the unit will not be able to keep up with the radiative loss of heat in the pipes as the water recirculates. Overall I'm happy with the units, with the amount I paid for them and the installation cost, I will recoup the difference in cost between them and standard electric water heater in about 2-3 years. Over a 10 year period they should save about $2000-$3000 dollars.

One week ago, I replaced my contractor grade 50 gal. electric water heater with the Rheem hybrid heat pump electric water heater. The purchase and delivery from The Home Depot was quick and easy. I had it installed by a plumber. The installation was very straight-forward. I was never satisfied with the hot water temperature at the faucets from my old electric water heater. What a difference with the Rheem! I'm using the default 120 deg. hot water setting. Now, the water at the faucets and in the shower is hotter than it has even been. It is located in my garage. The Florida climate provides all the heat necessary to heat my water. Returning from an outing and parking my car in the garage provides an additional heat source. I'm running it entirely in the heat pump mode without using the electric heating elements, yet it operates for only brief periods. When it is running and drawing in hot air from my garage to heat the water, cool dry air is exhausted back into the garage. It is not the equivalent of an air-conditioner, but the environment in my garage feels more comfortable now. I won't be able to report on savings in electricity until my next water bill arrives. Considering the heavy electrical current consumed by the electric heating elements in my old water heater, I'm very optimistic that my monthly electric bill will now be lower. Installing the Rheem app on my iPhone and connecting the water heater to my WiFi network was not difficult. The app provides remote control of the system from my iPhone along with warnings of system problems. The hybrid heat pump water heater concept is so logical in Florida. It seems to be fulfilling its promise. I have no negatives to report. I highly recommend it.

It is impossible to review a water heater that you have only had installed for less than 2 weeks. I am giving it 5 stars due to its functionality and the fact it worked upon turning on. A follow up review in say 5 or 6 years would actually be something in which a person could base their purchase. However, one word of advice would be to avoid scheduling the installation thru Home Depot. Their installer wanted $1,200 to install this water heater. That should embarrass them. It took my plumber about 3 hours to install it using copper (not PEX) and sweating the copper pipe. In addition he installed a kitchen faucet that I also bought from H.D. all for $260.00! This is not brain surgery folks and does not merit $400 per hour for 1 person's labor.

Easy installation for a do-it yourselfer. I replaced an existing electric water heater. Most challenging part was using a hand dolly to get the water heater into the proper position. My hand dolly can also lay down on four wheels and I recommend you use this type. While still upright, remove the cardboard box but keep the styrofoam supports in place. Unbolt the heater from the shipping pallet. Then using the hand dolly, tilt the unit over so it is horizontal on top of the dolly which is now on 4 wheels. Remove the pallet and now position the drip pan against the foot of the dolly and slide the heater towards the pan and remove all gap. Now tilt the unit back vertically onto the floor; unit is now upright and in the pan. Slide into final position, plumb the drain and other piping, fill unit with water, purge all air, connect wiring last, and then energize the breaker. Adult family of 4 and I have the unit set on heatpump only mode at 130F. Have not run out of hot water. Very pleased with unit.
