We bought this chalk paint to repurpose my parents furniture and we absolutely loved it! The quality of the paint is great and it provides very good coverage, one coat to get a distressed look and two coats will give you a finished, polished look. I only wish Home Depot carried more colors in stock. Overall, we're very pleased and would highly recommend this paint!

Chalk paint is all the rage. I think that fad will fade. I had nothing but trouble with this paint -- have never had so much trouble with a paint, and I'm very well versed with Rust-oleum's other (wonderful) products, both oil and latex. But THIS. OMG. The first coat I put on after a light sand looked good. But after it cured, I set a small item on it and it left a gray smudge. I tried to add a matte polyurethane top coat to the dresser and desk -- and the paint literally melted beneath it, leaving "waves" of paint in its wake (just one pass -- I didn't go over and over it). Resanded and started over. Then used the recommended creme wax and rubbed on per can directions. That left streaks that made the product not look as pure matte as it did before the application. Yuck. BOTTOM LINE: Use this chalked paint on furniture that will not have to endure use. If you just look at the piece and don't have to use it, or if you're going for a true distressed look that weathers more as it is used, you may be ok. But if you're going for an ultra-matte paint look, go with a Behr matte paint instead of chalk paint. If using this product, don't try to do a second layer of paint or poly over the top, even after the first coat is well cured. For furniture (kids rooms, etc.) that will be brushed up against, stuff set on it, played on -- don't even CONSIDER this paint. Use one of the Rust-oleum latex or oil paints instead. I've used those for years on everything from furniture to bathroom vanities and it endures beautifully even with constant heavy use. I'm so disgusted with this product right now and so upset that I wasted an entire weekend trying to get it to look like someone other than a 5-year-old painted it. UGH. I'm sanding down both pieces and starting over with Rust-oleum latex white.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Sue. Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint has an ultra matte finish that provides excellent coverage and adhesion on furniture and home décor. To add extra protection to the coating, we recommend applying a clear coat of the Rust-Oleum Chalked Protective Topcoat and to also use coasters, trivets, etc.

This was my first experience using chalk paint. I was a little worried that I wouldn’t get the results I wanted since I really didn’t know what I was doing. This paint was so easy to use and the results are amazing!! I first stained the wood with a dark walnut stain to get the dark background effect. Then painted over it with this chalk paint and was amazed at how it instantly gave me the distressed, old farmhouse look I was wanting. I only used one coat on my furniture and achieve the results I wanted. I can’t say enough good things about this chalked paint. My 20 year old bedroom suite looks brand new!! I’ve always leaned towards Rust-Oleum paint for any of my paint needs and it has never let me down.

Used Annie Sloan paint and decided to give this a try. Rustoleum brand chalk paint was really great. Easy to work with, dried smooth without lines - used a foam brush. Sprayed polyurethane as a top coat given these are counter stools and wanted a more protective finish. My 20 year old maple stained counter stools now have a new look for $20 bucks! Thank you Rust-Oleum!

I am using this product for lower kitchen cabinets and have been very pleased. I have used both a brush and roller for application and find both equally easy to use. Just remember to use a top coat of wax or poly.

I use this as a base for most of my distressed pieces and love it! It's just as good as the expensive chalk paint and I don't have to make a special trip out of town to find it.

I really liked the rustoleum chalk paint itself but after some research I found that I should have primed the 80 year old bed frame I was redoing. The paint went on fine but when I applied the rustoleum chalk paint protection coat the original stain bleed through. It was as if I was using paint remover. So my advice is that if you are painting furniture over 50 years old use a primer. I was told older furniture had something in the stain or paint that will always bleed through. Lesson learned. I ended up repainting the bed and leaving it without the protective coat.

As usual Rustoleum has done it again!! I love this product!! The last 6 months I completed 5 projects including all my kitchen cabinets. It’s the easiest paint to apply with no sanding or priming required. I hope Home Depot continues to carry this product with a variety of colors.

I LOVE this paint! I couldn't decide between this and paying double for the highly reputable Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, but I just couldn't bring myself to fork over $35 for a quart of paint, so I thought I'd give this a try. I'm SO glad I did! I bought it to refinish my dining room table from a dull all over golden stain to a more colorful statement piece. I was worried the paint wouldn't hold up with the thick coat of poly I had originally on my table, but this worked really well. I didn't need to sand or prime at all. I did three coats with a basic $5 milk paint brush, letting it dry for about 30 minutes in between coats. Then I sanded to give a distressed look and finished with a finishing wax (I did not wipe the wax off, I let it dry and it works much better than wiping). I think it turned out great!

I had never used chalk paint before, and I balked at the price of a popular competitor. I read about this paint online and found the price to be more reasonable, so I gave it a try. As a novice furniture painter, I expected problems with drips or streakiness. I was surprised by how easy the Chalked paint was to apply. I used two coats on the frame of a dresser, followed by wax. I plan to try out different colors and perhaps the Rustoleum sealer.

I'm not thrilled with the touchup outcome--it looks like it needs repainting when done. The brush stroke look is the biggest negative regardless of quality of brush used(my cabinets were hand painted). Loved the color and price. Beware---careful with the finish chosen after 'chalking'. I recommend Rustoleum's chalked finishing CAN not their spray version(blotchy).

            Best Chalked Paint
This is the best chalked paint I’ve worked with and I’ve tried several different brands. Many of these brands are double the price and are harder to work with. This brand has great coverage. They may not have as many colors as the other chalked paint companies but if they have a color you need I’d try this brand first you won’t be sorry. Also this brand is half the price of the others.

Chalk paint went on beautifully! I painted some old bookcases with Linen white first, then with aged grey. I completed the project by covering with a minwax stain to darken the finish and then distressed the edges.

Based on the reviews, I'm wondering if I've done something wrong. I've applied two coats over an old wood set of dressers. The final product looked SO GOOD but the first water glass placed on the side table left an awful permanent mark. Then the dresser had makeup put on it, and it also wouldn't come off. It's not wipe-able and seems to stain with anything placed on it.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Teresa! Please keep in mind that Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint will achieve maximum durability when it fully cures in 7 to 10 days. We recommend using coasters and other protective items to protect the surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

I had an old bookcase I found on the side of the road, and always thought it was so ugly (but functional, so whatever). I finally decided to paint it so it would match my room, so I coated it with Rust-oleum Chalked Linen White. LOVE IT now & have received many compliments on it - this really pulled my apartment together & gave it a fresh look. One coat looked a bit more rustic than I was going for, so I went for two - it's so easy to apply though that it didn't even bother me. I am excited for my next project, and am considering applying the Chalked Smoked Glaze over it this weekend.

This is my first time using chalk paint. And although it seems a bit expensive it is so worth it. The finish is great when you don't want a latex paint look. It had more depth than a flat late too. Also much easier to distress.

The glaze can was very well secured in the package and there were metal clips on the lid to ensure it didn't become opened during transit. Directions on the can were very clear and easy to follow, but it required that the glaze be put on chalk paint, so I had to buy a can of chalk paint. I painted a picture frame with the spray chalk paint, let it dry completely, then applied the glaze, again letting it thoroughly dry. I was surprised when I opened the can of glaze because it only needed a couple of stirs. It didn't appear to have separated at all. I used a small throw away brush since the surface of the frame was rough and applied glaze on one area at a time. I found that to get the effect I wanted, I needed to let the glaze sit a little while before wiping it off. It was easy to wipe off with cheesecloth and I could see that you could easily achieve any effect you wanted from very light to much heavier. The glaze was easy to work with and I was very pleased with the results.

I've refinished kitchen cabinets, bookcases, wardrobes before using the much more expensive (& only available in specialty shops) Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (available in chalk, pre-mixed or powdered form) & feel in love with the ease (No sanding or priming needed) of completely making over furniture & cabinetry in a very short period of time. Have half a day? Redo your kitchen or select furniture for a whole new look. I had read reviews of Rustoleum's fairly recent advance into chalk paint & decided to give it a try. I'm VERY glad I did!! Same basic usage as Annie Sloan, same to very close overall finished coverage. Can dilute as necessary for different "aged" appearance as you can with Annie Sloan. Overall, Rustoleum is now my go to brand for chalk paint & I look forward to the addition of more colors & local availability without having to wait for order to arrive on more diverse colors than beige or gray. Definitely recommend for anyone else timid about leaving the dependable & expensive Annie Sloan line!

This was so easy to use. I covered a very old conference room table. I even used a roller brush on the second coat because I was pressed for time. I didn't give it 5 stars because it took two coats to cover completely. But I am so pleased with this paint and at a fraction of the cost of others. I am onto a desk now with another color!
