Not like it used to be
Haven’t used this textured paint in a few years but I remembered how well it worked on my last project. Unfortunately, this product seems to have gone downhill. This stuff is like tinted water. I can see I’m going to need several cans instead of just one. I kept shaking the can thinking it wasn’t mixed but that wasn’t the case. Last time I used this type, I could see the texture in the first coat. Not this year. This project is going to cost a lot more than originally planned.

Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this, Murphy! When applying Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Multicolor Textured Spray Paint, hold the can 10-16" from the surface and spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. For the best finish, we recommend applying two or more light coats a few minutes apart. Doing this should ensure coverage of 10-12 square feet per can.

    Bad quality
I bought a box of 6, thinking I have enough for repainting a small table saw. One can will cover about 2sqfoot max. It's not covering bare metal very good. Using as directed, it spays uneven and sometimes clogging up the nozzle. No good.

Let's see what we can figure out. The labeled directions on our Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Textured Spray Paint has some great information on how to improve coverage on bare metal. Use of Stops Rust Primer provides added corrosion protection, superior adhesion and hiding and is especially recommended for bare wood and metal. A base coat of a similar color will aid in coverage. For best results, be sure to read the product label instructions carefully prior to applying.

Low paint volume for the price.it took 6 cans for a project that should have taken 2 cans of regular spray paint.
    Great end result, goodlooking finish.

I’m not the typical use case for this item, but I figured I’d weigh in in case anyone else is like me. But to start: I did not have issues with a blocked nozzle or patchiness like others have said. I bought this to make a faux brick wall for a Halloween prop. I tried it first on some styrofoam— the kind that’s sort of unfinished, bumpy rather than shiny and smooth. Not surprisingly, it melted the foam. I tried the same material with some acrylic paint as a barrier. Way less melting. I tried it on cardboard next. Not a great look. The texture is pretty fine, so the coverage for a Brick look would require 4 or 5 coats I think. Someone else mentioned, this is for the texture not color and I agree. You need a base of whatever you want underneath. Like you can’t turn a white piece of furniture bronze with this unless you’re doing a ton of coats.

    Rust-Oleum multicolor textured spray paint
Used to texture cheep fender skirts. Keep a rag handy, something white/clear, builds up quickly on the spray tip then drips into your surface leaving an untextured spot. Be prepared to do 2 light costs. I then went over them with 3/4 light costs of Rust-Oleum trim and bumper to make black again. After some trial and error project turned out pretty good.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the coverage with this textured spray is less than what you'd expect, but the results are beautiful! We used it to give a little texture and dimension to a metal beam we left exposed in our basement. We started by giving the beam a couple of coats of flat black Rustoleum spray paint prior to adding the textured paint. It took 4 cans to coat the exposed parts of the beam with a nice, consistent finish. It looks a lot like the black granite we used in our bar area and coordinates nicely with the brick walls. The results are well worth the effort!

This is, quite honestly, the WORST SPRAY PAINT I'VE EVER USED! I bought 2 cans to cover a 2 drawer file cabinet. On the first can, it stopped spraying or clogged after a very short time - probably about 3/4 of the can was left. I then had to turn the spray nozzle, shake, or otherwise try all sorts of positions to get it down to about 1/4 can left, and by that time I had so many starts and stops, blotches, and other imperfections, the file cabinet looked terrible. I gave up on this can and started my second can (even though there was still product shaking around in the first can). The second can was worse - I only got it down to about half of the product left. But now that I started, I couldn't stop - so had to run to Home Depot (Returned the 2 cans as defective), and got two more. Both of these cans had similar issue - but I was out of options, so just kept shaking, turning the nozzle, trying new angles, and getting very tired of pressing the nozzle down to find nothing happening. In the end, I got both of these cans to near zero product left, but it took a LOT of starts and stops, and because of that, was blotchy. I have never had new cans of paint perform this poorly. On top of that, coverage was terrible - after 2 full cans and 2 partial cans, it's splotchy, and while you can't see the original (gray) file cabinet color, there are a lot of spots that are a grayish tint and really ought to get more paint - but I'm DONE with this paint, and it's going to do as-is. This paint is terrible - the nozzle is just not designed correctly to let this paint (which includes sand or some similar grit) flow through the nozzle. The photos don't show the blotchiness as well as it looks in real life - I've spray painted plenty of things over the years, and never had a spay paint job take this much work or come out this way. In the end, the file cabinet does not look terrible - but if I was starting over, I would absolutely NOT paint with this product again...

Oh no, we understand your frustration, Steve! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Texture Spray will not cover quite as well as solid colors, due to the texture of the finish and the flecked color appearance. To assist with the coverage of the product, you can apply a solid base coat of paint or primer that is close to the color of the Multicolored paint. Try spraying the can upside down for a few seconds. If that doesn't work, wiping the nozzle with mineral spirits should clear it out. It is also very important to vigorously shake the can for 1 minute beforehand as well as during application to ensure any settled pigment is dispersed. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

It creates a really cool effect! Have used on metal, glass and wood and I love it! However, it doesn't cover as much as regular spray paint, I've learned to pre-paint my project and use this for effect only, it is not good for full coverage.

Final result looked good. I was painting rain gutter downspouts I had added. The finely-textured dull appearance helped these blend with older downspouts and uneven paint on house. Observations: 1. Covers less surface area than typical can of spray paint (has texture material besides the pigment and vehicle) 2. Tendency to throw glops of paint/texture with new can. Mitigated by shaking new can vigorously with can upside down. 3. Uneven application not evident while painting required 2 or more coats to blend.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Bill! You are right, each can of Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Textured Spray Paint has a recommended coverage of 4-6 square feet. Applying over a similar colored top coat helps with coverage and an even appearance. For the best results, we do recommend applying 2 or more light coats a few minutes apart and shaking the can often during your application. Rustoleum

After installing new floors, the beige heater vent covers looked bad. Instead of spending $30.00 (each) on 4 new covers, we used this paint. It worked beautifully, looks great and is durable. Mmmm maybe the iron patio furniture will be next!

I'm putting up a vintage scroll fence that is rusted. I used this product to paint the "T" posts to match. It does have the appearance of heavily rusted metal, so the color and texture was perfect. Not sure how long it will last. The can of paint did not seem to last as long as plain (untextured) colors, but I was painting it over dark green posts.

        Waste of time and money
We got a can of this paint to redo an toy dump truck our grandson plays with in the back yard. The only good thing about this paint is that it sprays out of the can very well. The directions say to use two light coats. After about 4 light coats we ran out of paint and still hadn't gotten color coverage. By the time you spray enough paint on to get any visible color build the paint starts to sag. The coverage is splotchy at best. We could have painted 3 or 4 of this size toy with a regular paint. So unless you don't mind using at least 3 times as much paint on your project, and even then with marginal results I'd recommend another paint like the hammered finish.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Pete. Keep in mind that Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Multi-Colored Textured Paint will not have the same coverage as a standard RO paint. Depending on what you're painting, you may want to consider using a paint or primer that's similar in color underneath to help. This may help with the application. Rustoleum

        Waste of money and time
We got this paint to redo a patio table. I shot the paint at 63 degrees F on a sunny afternoon with a light breeze, all within the guidelines on the can. The best thing about this paint is that is sprays out of the can well with minimal overspray. After that everything else is downhill. Directions say apply two light coats. Not sure exactly what light means for this paint. By the time I had enough build to see any coverage of the surface the paint started to sag. I couldn't get a solid build after three coats and ended up not completing half the table legs before I ran out of paint. With other paints one can would have completely finished the job. The paint finish never approached the solid color coverage and texturing "sample" on the lid. Even three coats left a splotchy appearance. Possibly because I was shooting round table legs that affected the coverage, but I didn't see anything the said it was only for flat surfaces. In summary, I won't get any more of this paint and I don't recommend it. Live without the advertised effect and get something like the hammered finish.

        Interesting texture
I picked this can of paint and decided to use it on an old table that sits outside of our garage that we place things on as needed. It is an old wooden table that had green paint already on it. This paint was completely different than I was anticipating. It actually gives a unique rustic feel to whatever material you are going to spray it on. My mind immediately thought that I will use this for some craft projects when I want something to look like an antiqued rusted copper type of look! I love the finish, it is really creative and will give a great finish in the right instance. The only caution I will give is that one can doesn't go very far, although it is perfect for a smaller project!

A Bit More Application Info Please
I guess I thought this product would be a bit more like that Forest Green Color that was popular on patio furniture for many years. Like one other person mentioned, it seems a bit thin on base color but I found a simple solution to that problem. I merely used Rust-oleum's Painter's Touch 2x paint in the forest green base color as a primer on my project. That made the final color very uniform but I still got the rich look by the "bits" of multi-color. Also, as another person mentioned, there is a lot of propellant in the can. Actually, I believe the pressure in the can might be higher than with other Rust-oleum products but don't know that for sure except for the distance of the spray and the sound of the spray. This is probably quite necessary to eject the bits of supplemental color in this multi-color paint. I ended up holding the can about an additional six inches further away from the surface than I would with other Rust-oleum spray paints. That's seemed to work well. So once I had my primer base, I added my texture with a couple of thin coats of this paint. The result I achieved looked almost identical to the large sample on the product page. See my close up with this review. I can't imagine using this over bare metal sanded spots without using a base color but maybe the manufacturer could comment on that. The paint dries quickly to the touch just as described and I applied all of my color, base coat and this as two topcoats, within one hour. Please note that if you wait more than an hour after a given coat you should wait 48 hours to add more coats. There are a number of paint products like this on the market today. It probably has to do with trapping solvents between uncured coats. As the title of this review indicates, I would like to see more application information on this product since the sheet you can download seems somewhat generic for multiple texture paint sprays. I suspect there was something specific in mind when this paint was developed and that purpose doesn't seem completely obvious to me. One final concern I have is how easy a textured paint like this will be to clean in the future. It is probably durable like other Rust-oleum paints but I am not sure what it will be like to clean something of this texture. Will the little dots of multi-color stay in place? Just a question and not necessarily a negative comment.

        Love the NEW Spray Paint
I received a can of CLEAR Rustoleum spray paint, and I was truly delighted to find out I could use it on my Rattan patio furniture. Even though this chair was relatively new, I wanted the added advantage of having a clear protective, weatherproof coating on it. This new can of spray paint, with the newest comfort sprayer was perfect in every way. I had read some of the online reviews, and can honestly tell you I had NO problems whatsoever. I had minor difficulty getting the protective red tab off, but I've also been suffering from shoulder pain recently. After that I sprayed my Rattan chair at least 3-4 times and there was not one single drip or over-spray that came from my can of paint. The finished product is a delight, in my opinion, and I would not hesitate for a moment to purchase an entire case in the near future. Thank you Home Depot and Rustoleum. Great product with great results.

There's a lot of propellant in this can - watch for distant objects getting painted too
I don't know when I've had a can of aerosol paint that came out in such a hurry! This paint is of a very unique type, it doesn't even say what color it sprays, just multi-colored! My trial project has a cool effect, or sheen, but looks as if it will take more than a few coats to really cover. It's interesting, the effect it makes. I've gone heavy and just blasted this pot to see what would happen - and it's a different type of finish, that's for sure... pigment seems a tad thin. But I will keep blasting and see what it looks like after like ten coats!

I used this on an outdoor dining table, small round table and 8 chairs. It took a lot (2 cases ) to do it right but looks great. And it lasts. No problem with water. A little sun fade after 1 year. Easy to touch up and match's perfectly. It really goes on evenly and looks professional from even someone like me. But, get the sprayer attachment or your finger will get wrecked after a few cans.

I've always loved the look & feel of this product. I have painted several metal gates, furniture, etc with it but over time, 6 months to 1 year, it tends to fade & turn this whitish hue and I have to repaint. It's annoying & has gotten expensive. It seems the more sun exposure the faster it happens. I'm ready to give up on this product unless someone has a solution. It has done it on everything I have painted that is exposed to sun. I've primed and not primed and I get the same result no matter what I do to prep the material before I paint. Anyway, I do not think I will use this product again as it has gotten to expensive & time consuming to repaint everything each year. I called Rust-Oleum support & they did not have any solutions or tips to offer me. Shoulder shrug??

Happy, happy, happy with results. The textured protective enamel is great for restoring a six chair table/patio set to new. We've enjoyed the set with shiny and textured finish over the years and highly recommend the paint. Our town typically experiences wind and dampness due to our coastal location. Yes, we fight rust over time. It took me longer than expected to complete the project because I waited until we had windless days to do the spraying. A friend recommended the trigger handle that fits easily over the top of the can for a more relaxed, controlled spray. We've used the same color/paint on the diving board platform and skimmer cover to the pool. I highly recommend this product.

          Spray Paint
The spray paint (which looks like sand in color and texture) is easier and stays better than using glue and real sand, it is also easier to use, and I use it on a lot of craft projects for my beach themed bathroom and around the house. Picture is of the latest project, have also used it on the frame of mirrors and covered with seashells.

          Centerpiece Project
Spray paint was purchased to paint some wine bottles for a centerpiece project/gift for an upcoming bridal shower. Product was easy to use, gave the effect I was wanting as far as the aged iron look. I was painting 4 bottles and it did take two cans to paint the 4 with at least 2 coats. The Home Depot paint dept. personnel was knowledgeable with some tips on making this project successful. Centerpieces are not completely done; attached is a picture showing the bottles so far.

          A Soothing Coastal Color
I am using this pretty, light and airy color to dull down a fence topper made with steel corrugated panels. Also, I am painting some old patio furniture to match. The panels reflect the sunlight too brightly and become too hot. It took about two to three cans to lightly cover one two by ten foot panel. This paint softened the glare nicely tying together the colors of the sky and our pool. In the shadows behind foliage the steel panels now blend in beautifully. We are very happy with this product. I would love to find this in more colors and a brush-on paint, too.
