Bought upgraded Zircon thinking it was better. Too Many False Reads, was not simple to use. Maybe works better on metal studs, who knows, wasn't my project. Too bad my old Zircon from 15 years ago broke. Newer & more features not always better. Buy the cheaper Zircon Model, save your $$$$$$$$

Hello Bob. We're sorry to hear your HD800 is not functioning properly for you. There are variables in construction that can cause a StudSensor to give false readings and quite often these issues have to do with the environment you’re operating on. There are tried and true techniques we can help you with that can explain why the tool is reacting to density changes that may not be studs and will also promote consistent scanning results. We would be happy to trouble shoot this with you, whatever the problem may be. We stand behind our product. Please contact us through the Zircon website and we’ll figure it out for you. Thank you. zircon

Not exactly sure if it’s working right but sometimes you’ll find the stud and then if you go over the same spot it shows nothing and finding the center is a pain.

Decent product but inconsistent. It would say there is a stud where there wasn't. Best option is to use it to find one and then measure over depending on the distance between the studs in your building.

Hello. We're sorry to hear your HD800 is not functioning properly for you. You should not have to find one stud and then measure over to find other studs. The unit should find every stud you scan for. There are variables in construction that can cause a stud sensor to give false readings and quite often these issues have to do with the environment you’re operating on. There are tried and true techniques we can help you with that can explain why the tool is reacting to density changes that may not be studs and will also promote consistent scanning results. Didn’t do anything more than the lower end version but had a prettier screen. Used it on a basement wall with a 1 in 4 stud hit ratio. Not impressed.

Hello didi. The battery icon on the HD800 does not ramp up and down like a cell phone battery indicator. It always shows 1/4 full. When the battery is low the icon will come on and stay on while the power button is held in and the tool is powered on. While the tool will still operate, the battery will need to be replaced soon. When the battery icon begins to flash and is the only icon displayed on the screen, the battery level is too low and not sufficient to power the tool for proper operation. This information is the instructions. Thank you. zircon

Hello Allton. Because of the varying density of materials that make up lath and plaster constructed walls, a standard stud sensor tool (such as many of the Zircon StudSensor products) will not work to find studs (this is stated on the packaging). The preferred technique would be to use a Zircon Studsensor that includes a “metal scan” mode such as the HD800. This will allow you to search out and map the nails that hold the horizontal lath pieces to the studs. This way it’s possible to map out the studs accurately. Check out Zircon’s website for detailed instructions on lath and plaster stud finding technique. Thank you. zircon

I didn't have any luck with this. I even called Zircon to ask which of their devices was most appropriate for this project. They recommended this one. It didn't accurately report studs through tile on any of the settings. Not accurate on recent construction through drywall either.

Hello. Scanning through bathroom tile can be problematic depending on the type of tile and the construction techniques used in the particular bathroom. If the construction behind the tile contains certain types of insulation, has dense backing or irregular thickness, normal stud scanning or deep scanning may not be effective or reliable. Zircon® recommends you use a scanning tool with metal scan capabilities which the HD800 has.
Using a metal scanner you can scan and map the nails that hold the wall board to the studs. The nails will be vertically stacked in fairly regular intervals. You can search "zircontv" on YouTube for videos that demonstrate this technique. When you have mapped out a stud, use a thin drill bit through the grout line on the tile wall to verify you're drilling into a stud.
If the bathroom wall you're scanning has an opposite side that is a normal wall (i.e. a bedroom or hall), you can use the normal stud scan mode to find the studs on the opposite side of the tiled bathroom surface. Then you can transfer the measurements over. If you have any further questions please contact us.
Contact us at 800-245-9265 mon-fri, 8am-5pm and we will walk you through the technique. Thank you zircon
