What is Cabinet Refacing?

Love your layout but not your cabinets? Our cabinet makeover service — also called cabinet refacing — is a custom, quality in-home service where your cabinets are updated with new doors, cabinet fronts, drawers, hinges, knobs and pulls. Plus, you can add features such as pull-out shelves and other storage solutions as well as more cabinets, an island, and even a backsplash or countertop as part of your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to commonly asked questions

What’s included in this service?

Home Depot’s cabinet makeover (cabinet refacing) service includes: new doors and drawers, new hardware, new hinges, and new veneer to complement the new style and color of your doors and drawers, all custom-measured and built for your kitchen.

These additional features are also available: soft-close hinges and slides, cabinet lighting, moulding, a matching toe kick, organization options, new countertops, new backsplash, new sink, heightening your cabinets, adding an island and changing your kitchen cabinet valance.

How does Home Depot screen for quality installers?
All of our cabinet makeover (cabinet refacing) pros are licensed, insured, background checked and have renovator certificates.
What cabinet style and color options can I choose from?
Home Depot offers a wide variety of style and color combinations to reface your cabinets. Our door and drawer options range from modern shaker and slab to classic arch and cathedral styles in gray, white or wood grains. Available finishes include stains, paints and high gloss acrylics.
What is cabinet refacing?
Cabinet refacing is a quick and convenient way to give your kitchen a new look in less time than it would take for a full remodel. This is why we also refer to it as our cabinet makeover service. Once your cabinetry arrives, The Home Depot can help you build your dream kitchen or bathroom in just a few days with minimal disruption to your home life. In fact, most homeowners can continue using their space during the refacing process. Please note that in projects where lead-based paint may be disturbed, you will not have access to your space per lead-safe work practices.
Why should I consider refacing my cabinets versus a complete remodel?
Cabinet refacing (or a cabinet makeover) is an excellent choice if you like the layout of your kitchen or bathroom and some elements of your cabinets and countertops. With a full remodel, you’ll start from scratch and make changes to your whole kitchen or bathroom design.
What does cabinet refacing typically involve?
During refacing, the framework of your cabinets (known as the cabinet box) remains intact. Meanwhile, other elements such as cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hinges and handles, will be replaced. You can also choose to install or replace countertops, tile backsplashes, lighting and more as part of your project.
How long does the refacing process take?
Once installation begins, most cabinet refacing projects can be completed in just 3 to 5 days. In less than a week, you can have a space that provides improved functionality and lasting enjoyment.
How long will my updated cabinets look brand new?
With proper care, your new cabinetry can keep your kitchen looking great for decades. Avoid water, mold and structural damage to keep your new cabinetry looking its best.

The project that was done was done the best it could be, but the only thing is that once done, it did not really feel great value for the money.

Still waiting on crown molding that the project coordinator forgot to order. Also have been waiting since December 14th to get delivery date for granite. No responses received from this company after 5 phone calls... text messages... and attempts by Home Depot to get a response. Customer service by project coordinator is the worst I have ever experienced. Too many peyhave dropped the ball on this project and instead of taking responsibility, it is being ignored. I’m sure this survey will also be ignored.

Our cabinets turned out amazing and John, the installer, was extremely skilled. He did a fantastic job and was meticulous in making it right. One thing that might have been communicated better before the cabinets were installed was how long the process would take. I don't recall ever being told how long, but it was my impression it would be done in a few days with a team of installers. Instead, installation went on for two weeks with just one installer who had to go up and down 6 flights of stairs with all the materials with no helper. I was surprised that a job this custom and strenuous would be contracted out to one installer. I think Home Depot could have done better setting realistic expectations, even letting us know that one person would be doing the entire job by themselves. I know HD contracts out, but seems like the contractors who work on their own should be able to hire a helper. Overall, our cabinets and the entire process was 5 stars! Thank you so much! Best, Chris Keller

I wish that HD had left caretaking instructions and if there is a way to adjust the soft close hinges.

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing

Refacing cabinets improves the look and feel of your home in less time than a full remodel. During your cabinet refacing project, your existing cabinet doors and drawer fronts will be replaced with high-quality veneer materials, while the structure of your cabinetry remains. With new hardware and new cabinet doors and drawer fronts that match the replaced frames, your kitchen will have a brand new look. As part of the installation, you can choose to upgrade the inside of your cabinets with dovetail drawer boxes or new drawer slides for a soft close every time.

Your refacing project with The Home Depot can also include cabinet organization, a new kitchen island, replacement countertops, or installation of new backsplashes or sinks to match your refaced cabinetry. Whether your style is modern, classic, contemporary or somewhere in between, you can choose from cabinet refacing color options, including shades of brown, white, gray and more. Add new drawer pulls and knobs in different styles for endless possibilities. Backsplash options range from classic white subway tile to interlocking and square designs in a variety of materials that will go great with your newly refaced cabinets. You can even add organizational items such as a pot-and-pan caddy or a sink-base pull-out.

Cabinet refacing has many benefits. Most projects take only a few days and you can keep using your kitchen while upgrades are being made. Even better, your refaced cabinets will offer the convenience of a custom kitchen. While you can complete a cabinet refacing project yourself, working with our hand-picked professionals includes a free in-home design consultation, high-quality craftsmanship, and a kitchen you’ll love with little to no hassle.

Cabinet Refinishing

While cabinet refinishing and cabinet refacing provide similar results, the process of how the cabinets receive their facelift is different. At the beginning of both projects, a service provider will safely remove all cabinet fronts, doors and hardware, leaving only the frame on the walls. However, instead of replacing existing materials with brand new options, cabinet resurfacing projects are limited to the sanding and restaining or painting of cabinet surfaces.

With a refinishing project, you can only change the color of your kitchen. But cabinet refacing from The Home Depot lets you add an entirely new cabinet style, plus other storage options and accessories, without the mess involved with sanding or staining. Before considering a cabinet refinishing project, learn more about cabinet refacing by scheduling a free in-home consultation with one of our experienced project consultants.

Cabinet Refacing Cost

With cabinet refacing, you can customize your kitchen’s current layout in a variety of ways in less time than remodeling. In less than a week, you can have a refreshed kitchen. To learn more about the cost of a cabinet refacing project, visit our cost guide.

Before and After Photos

A great way to visualize the impact of your mini-makeover is to take before and after pictures of your kitchen area. When you let The Home Depot reface your cabinets, be sure to take photos of your kitchen before the project begins. Once it’s finished and your installer has cleaned up, snap some after photos to compare your new upgraded style to the old design. Your pictures will show the positive impact cabinet refacing has made on your home’s interior design.
