How can I get crisp, straight lines when painting stripes on my wall?

The secret to crisp, straight lines is in the technique. Start with a clean, smooth, and dry wall, patching up holes and sanding down rough spots. Select a high-quality painter's tape designed for clean lines. Use a level or laser level to create straight lines, mark them with a pencil, and apply the tape. I don't want to buy too much tape. What's a good starting amount for general use?

Two rolls of standard painter's tape are a good place to start. You can cover the walls and trim of one average-sized room, or a few accent walls or stripes, with some leftover for future small jobs. One roll is generally not enough for a full room. However, two rolls give you flexibility without overbuying. If you decide to tackle more rooms, you can always buy a bundle later.

Expect to use two to three rolls to repaint a bedroom, one roll to paint an accent wall or stripes, and five to six rolls to paint multiple rooms.
