What ways are there to get mulch delivered?
This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you reach a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party to help you get started on your outdoor project by delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders arrive via car for a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans at a $35 fee, and large orders come to you via box truck or flatbed truck for a $79 fee.
What if I want to pick up the mulch myself?
Yes, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. Even better, we're happy to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An Orange Apron can load a small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of any mulch, we recommend delivery.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car or van instead of a truck?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Yard mulch, also called loose or bulk mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may get free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for large truck or flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of yard mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll qualify for box truck or flatbed delivery. Most of the time, these are Pro customers, serious DIYers, or landscapers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's usually a delivery fee and minimum pallet order. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
What do I do about all these weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator and durable rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't get in your lungs or touch your skin.
Is my lawn dead?
It could be, but it's also likely taking a nap during those sizzling temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just brown and crispy. Here's how you can check on it: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply, but not often. What's the best time to water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, during the evening or in the early morning, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a great deal of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: lawns, gardens, and trees. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it when it's not the perfect time. The plants still need hydration, no matter what time it is. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.
Does my garden need fertilizer?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, you'll need to make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer that suits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one specially formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Follow the application instructions and don't add extra. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-chilled air is ready.
What do you carry for backyard entertaining?
Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like — it doesn't have to be a barbecue party. If you're planning on firing up the grill, make certain you know how to clean a grill afterward. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending and irrigation. Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the sod or grass seed you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Give it some TLC so it looks fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a riding lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around buildings, fences, or sidewalks.
Bushes, shrubs, and trees climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with blooms before you know it. Trim wild branches to the shape you want with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small bushes and trees.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering humming along. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers droop when they get wet, but they’ll recover once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many veggie plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem. Fasten the plant to a trellis, pole, or fence with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then, the stem has room to grow wider, and the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze.
Cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room between plants or fit even more of them.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Go with vine plants that are native to your area. They attract pollinators and are a good choice for success. Grape vines are a classic option, but they take time to mature, so you'll enjoy dappled shade but no grapes for a few years. Be sure to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance as you cool off in the shade.
