How do I know what planting zone I am in?
Take a look at the USDA plant hardiness zone map, as planting zones have changed over time. Zones with higher numbers can plant earlier in the year. Up the odds of successful gardening by choosing plants that grow well in your area.
What ways are there to get mulch delivered?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on your order size. For small orders, we can deliver via car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive mulch jobs, we have a fleet of box trucks and flatbeds ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. You can also pick up your mulch at the store for free, and orders that reach a purchase threshold may qualify for free delivery. Not sure how much you'll need? Check out our mulch calculator to get started. Keep scrolling for details below on mulch delivery via van, car, or truck.
Do you offer self-pickup for mulch orders?
Yes, you're welcome to pick up your mulch yourself. Even better, we're ready to help if you need it. After you buy mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An Orange Apron can load a small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of loose or bagged mulch, you'll likely want delivery.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car or van instead of a truck?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Loose mulch orders, also called yard or bulk mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may get free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
What size mulch order gets flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk mulch, you'll qualify for flatbed or box truck delivery. Most of the time, these are serious DIYers, Pro customers, or landscapers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I get rid of weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape liner fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull out weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear thick rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or your lungs.
How do I fix burned grass?
The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink. Continue to water it regularly. It should perk up over the course of a week. On the other hand, the game plan for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new sod, grass, or patch and repair grass seed.
When should I water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, during the evening or in the early morning, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: gardens, lawns, and trees. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it when it's not the ideal time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your lawn health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to look into adding a lawn fertilizer.
How do I fertilize my plants?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer to give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Follow the application instructions and don't add extra. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.
How do I entertain on the patio?
Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like it to be — it doesn't have to be a barbeque party. If you're planning on firing up the grill, make certain you know how to clean a grill when you're done. Many people relax outdoors or cook a meal together in an outdoor kitchen. However you bond with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free yard without pesky mosquitoes.

Celebrate Summertime Gardening
As we continue deeper into summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool. Just like we can get sunburned, plants and grass can dry out, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to help you, your lawn, and your garden make it through the hotter months with flying colors.
Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn, or plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll discover it once you move something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a trash can. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by pet behavior or extreme wear, you must use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you’re doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bare spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care to it. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant grass that thrives in the sunlight instead of a type that prefers dappled sun or shade.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering humming along. A general rule when watering plants and flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will work well. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers wilt when they get wet, but they’ll recover once they dry off. Succulents are the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific succulent varieties to optimize their care.
In addition to watering, keep an eye on the nutrients your plants are getting. Apply fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll enjoy a balanced diet with the right nutrients.
Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise herbs outdoors, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll thrive in the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.
Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. Avoid a yard of volunteer herbs when you just keep them in decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which doesn't use soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, rock chips, or perlite.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Go with vine plants that are native to your area to attract pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll have shade without grapes for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance as you cool off in the shade.
