Does The Home Depot deliver mulch?
This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you hit a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party, delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders arrive in a car with a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans at a $35 fee, and large orders will ship to you via box truck or flatbed truck for a $79 fee.
What if I want to pick up the mulch myself?
Yes, you're welcome to pick up your mulch yourself. Even better, we're happy to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An associate will load your small or medium mulch order into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk or bagged mulch, we recommend delivery.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car or van instead of a truck?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Yard mulch, also called bulk or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for flatbed or large truck delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of loose mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll be looking at box truck or flatbed delivery. Most of the time, these are landscapers, serious DIYers, or Pro customers working on a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
What are good ways to get rid of weeds?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull out weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off at ground level. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear heavy rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or lungs.
Is brown grass dead?
It could be, but it's likely taking a nap during those summer temperatures. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just crispy and brown. You can check on it though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new grass seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy. We have the lawn care you need for healthy cool-season and warm-season grass.
When should I water the grass?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means much of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: lawns, gardens, and trees. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the ideal time. The plants still need hydration, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your grass type, lawn health, and climate, you may also want to add a lawn fertilizer.
Does my flower garden need fertilizer?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, you'll need to make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter under a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that chilled air is ready.
Can I do a quick patio makeover before entertaining?
Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full patio makeover or create your own patio conversation sets from scratch to do it. Even a tiny backyard refresh can make a big difference. Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass seed or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Eventually, it'll need some maintenance to look fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a push lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around sidewalks, fences, or buildings.
Bushes, trees, and shrubs climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. They're growing fast, filled with blooms and buds before you know it. Prune them back to better show off their verdant beauty with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small branches on trees and bushes.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sun and water. You'll need both to keep spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to water the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. To avoid a yard full of mint or other herbs, keep them in decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, rock chips, or perlite.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Go with vine plants that are native to your area to attract pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll only be enjoying shade and not fruit for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't.
