How do I know which planting zone I'm in?

Can I get mulch delivered to my house?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. We can deliver small orders with a car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For the largest jobs, we have a fleet of box trucks and flatbeds ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Can I pick up my mulch order myself?
Yes, if you prefer, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. Even better, we're ready to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch online with store pickup or buy it in-store, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate can load your small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk yard or bagged mulch, we encourage you to choose delivery.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car or van instead of a truck?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Loose mulch orders, also called bulk or yard mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for large truck or flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk yard mulch, you'll be looking at box truck or flatbed delivery. Normally, these are serious DIYers, landscapers, or Pro customers working on a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How can I treat weeds in my vegetable garden?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape liner fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear thick rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or get in your lungs.
Is crispy grass dead?
It could be, but it's probably just napping during those summer temperatures. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check to verify though: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply once every week. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy. When should I water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, during the evening or in the early morning, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a great deal of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: trees, gardens, and lawns. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it when it's not the perfect time. The plants still need water to live, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your lawn health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.
How do I fertilize my plants?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Follow the application instructions and don't add extra. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-chilled air is ready.
What do I need for backyard entertaining?
Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like — it doesn't have to be a barbecue party. If you're planning on firing up the grill, make certain you know how to clean a grill afterward. Set Up For Summertime
As summer stretches on, your landscaping and garden will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, shade, and proper tending. Just like we can get sunburned, plants can dry out, grass can get scorched, and trees can lose their leaves early. We've got advice to help you, your garden, and your lawn make it through the hotter months with flying colors.
Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has a distinctively shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn, or plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll discover it once you move something sitting in the yard, like a trash can or hose. Mirrors or car windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll have to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.
Whether you’re doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bare spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care accordingly. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant grass that thrives in the sunlight instead of a type that prefers dappled sun or shade.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're ensuring your garden is watered, don't forget about the trees and shrubs. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not difficult to learn how to water bushes and trees — just be sure to aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from turning yellow or brown. Also, check for damage on your trees and shrubs. Pests can destroy your greenery.
Look for holes in leaves, spots on bark or leaves, or strange raised scars on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your tree or shrub.
Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many veggie plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches. Fasten the plant to a trellis, fence, or pole with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then, the stem has room to grow wider, and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze.
Cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of string, a sling, old nylons, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Set up vines to climb an arched arbor or trellis to provide both beauty and shade. Vine plants native to your area are a good choice for success and for attracting pollinators. Wisteria, jasmine, and ivy are common options for creating a stunning archway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some prefer full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance as you cool off in the shade.
