Take a look at the USDA zone map, as planting zones have changed slightly over time. Zones with higher numbers can begin planting earlier in the year. Choose plants that grow well in your area and up your chances of successful gardening.
Does the type of mulch delivery affect the cost?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. We can deliver small orders with a car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive mulch projects, we have a fleet of box trucks and flatbeds ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Of course, you can always choose our free in-store pickup option as well, and orders that meet a purchase threshold may qualify for free delivery. Not sure how much you'll need? Can I get my mulch order loaded into my truck?
Yes, you're welcome to pick up your own mulch. We're also happy to help if you need it. After you buy mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate will load your small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk yard or bagged mulch, delivery is easiest.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car or van instead of a truck?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Bulk mulch, also called loose or yard mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may get free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
What size mulch order gets flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of loose mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll qualify for flatbed or box truck delivery. Normally, these are Pro customers, serious DIYers, or landscapers working on a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I treat weeds in my veggie garden?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and durable rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or get in your lungs.
Is it possible to fix burnt grass?
The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a lengthy drink. You'll need to rehydrate those roots. It should perk up within the next week. On the other hand, the game plan for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new sod, grass seed, or patch and repair grass seed.
What's the best time to water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: trees, grass, plants, and veggies. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the ideal time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your lawn health, climate, and grass type, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.
Does my flower garden need fertilizer?
Once you've got your plants into pots or the ground, make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that suits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the sod or grass seed you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Eventually, it'll need some maintenance to look fresh and manicured. Keep the lawn in check with a self-propelled lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around buildings, fences, or sidewalks.
Trees, shrubs, and bushes climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Prune them back to better show off their verdant beauty with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small bushes and trees.
Watch Your Garden Thrive

Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which doesn't use soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, perlite, or sand.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Go with vine plants that are native to your area. They attract pollinators and are a good choice for success. Grape vines are a classic option, but they take time to mature, so you'll have shade without grapes for a few years. Be sure to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun.
