Check the USDA zone map, as planting zones have evolved through the years. Zones with higher numbers can plant earlier in the year. Choose plants that are meant for your zone and increase your odds of successful gardening.
Can I get mulch delivered to my house?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. We can deliver small orders via car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For the largest projects, we have a fleet of flatbeds and box trucks ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Do you offer self-pickup for mulch orders?
Yes, you can pick up your own mulch. Even better, we're happy to help if you need it. After you buy mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An associate can load your small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk yard or bagged mulch, delivery is a wise choice.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Bulk mulch, also called loose or yard mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may get free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for flatbed or large truck delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk mulch, you'll be looking at box truck or flatbed delivery. Most of the time, these are landscapers, Pro customers, or serious DIYers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
What are good ways to get rid of weeds?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off at ground level. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear heavy rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or skin.
Can I fix burnt grass?
The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink. You'll need to rehydrate those roots. It should perk up by the following week. On the other hand, the game plan for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new sod, grass seed, or patch and repair grass seed.
Is there an ideal time to water my lawn and garden?

You can even find one specially formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.
What do I need for backyard entertaining?
Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like it to be — it doesn't have to be a barbeque party. If you're focusing on firing up the grill, make certain you know how to clean a grill afterward. Set Up For Summer
As we continue deeper into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, grass can get scorched, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to help you, your garden, and your lawn make it through the hotter months with flying colors.
Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that looks yellow. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight, or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll discover it once you move something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a trash can. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it needs neutralizing after urine damage, you must use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care accordingly. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn gets plenty of strong sunlight, make sure you plant full sun grass seed instead of a type that prefers shade or dappled sun.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Make sure to water your garden. That's the way to keep it going between rainstorms and enjoy the summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will work well. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. Avoid a yard of volunteer herbs when you just keep them in small plant pots on a porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, perlite, or rock chips.
Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree — whether they're deciduous tree saplings, evergreens, or more mature trees.
Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider how deep the taproots go, the full-grown size of the trees you want, and how far the root ball extends outward. Trees will always find the easiest source of water, so be sure to plant them away from your water pipes to avoid roots growing into them. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider where and how they'd fall if disease or a storm weakened them.
