Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How do I check my USDA planting zone?

Check the USDA plant hardiness zone map, as planting zones have evolved through the years. Zones with higher numbers can plant earlier in the year. Up the odds of successful gardening by planting veggies, flowers, and trees that are meant for your zone.

How can I get my mulch delivered?

The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. We can deliver small orders via car for a $3 fee. As orders get bigger, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For the largest projects, we have a fleet of box trucks and flatbeds ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Of course, you can always choose our free in-store pickup option as well, and orders that reach a purchase threshold may qualify for free delivery. Not sure how much you'll need? Check out our mulch calculator to get started. Get more details below on mulch delivery via van, car, or truck.

Can I pick up my mulch order myself?

Yes, you're welcome to pick up your own mulch. Even better, we're ready to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch online with store pickup or buy it in-store, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An Orange Apron will load a small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of any mulch, delivery is easiest.

Does my mulch get delivered in a car or van instead of a truck?

If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Yard mulch, also called loose or bulk mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.

Who qualifies for flatbed or large truck mulch delivery?

When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk mulch, you'll get flatbed or box truck delivery. Often, these are landscapers, serious DIYers, or Pro customers working on a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.

How do I treat weeds?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or landscape liner fabric to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear heavy rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or skin.

Is my grass dead?

It could be, but it's probably just taking a break during those summer temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It turns crispy and brown, but isn't usually dead. You can check on it though: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply, but not often. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy. We have the lawn care you need for healthy cool-season and warm-season grass.

What's the best time to water my lawn and garden?

If you can water at least once a day, during the evening or in the early morning, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering when the sun is at its peak means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: gardens, lawns, and trees. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it when it's not the ideal time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your lawn health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to add a lawn fertilizer.

Should I fertilize my flower garden?

Once you've planted your flowers or veggie plants, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one intended for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from the heat, shelter beneath a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I do a quick patio makeover for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full patio makeover or create your own patio conversation sets from scratch to do it. Even a tiny backyard refresh can make a big difference. New outdoor lounge furniture, rugs, or even outdoor string lights can add character to a patio.

Set Up For Summer
As we continue deeper into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more heat than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, grass and plants can dry out, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to help you, your garden, and your lawn sail through the hotter months with flying colors.

Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass seed or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Eventually, it'll need some maintenance to look fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a self-propelled lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around sidewalks, fences, or buildings.

Bushes, shrubs, and trees climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with blooms and buds before you know it. Prune them back to a more manicured state with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave tree topping and major tree maintenance to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small branches on trees and bushes.

Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the trees and shrubs. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still dry out in the summer sun. It's not difficult to learn how to water bushes and trees — just be sure to aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and prevent it from turning yellow or brown. Also, check for damage on the trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery.

Look for holes in leaves, spots on leaves or bark, or strange raised scars on the bark that look like artistic decoration. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your tree.

Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap those parts of the plants. Fasten the plant to a fence, trellis, or pole with plant ties and wires, string, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then, the stem has room to grow wider, and the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze.

Strawberries, watermelon, squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room between plants or fit even more of them.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the appearance of your yard. Whether you plant an accent tree or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree — whether they're deciduous tree saplings, evergreens, or more mature trees.

A backyard forest can be the stuff of dreams, but research what you're planting beforehand. Consider the full-grown size of the trees you want, how far the root ball extends outward, and how deep the taproots go. Plant your trees far from plumbing pipes, as their strong roots will seek water and creep into piping to get it. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if disease or a storm weakened them.

If you've carefully planned, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze sooner rather than later.
