How do I know what planting zone I am in?
Check the USDA plant hardiness zone map, as planting zones have changed over time. Zones with bigger numbers can begin planting earlier in the year. Up your chances of successful gardening by planting flowers, veggies, and trees that grow well in your area of the country.
Is it expensive to get mulch delivered?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. For small orders, we can deliver via car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive jobs, we have a fleet of flatbeds and box trucks ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Can I get my mulch order loaded into my truck?
Yes, you're welcome to pick up your own mulch. We're also ready to help if you need it. After you buy mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate can load your small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of any mulch, delivery is a wise choice.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Bulk mulch, also called yard or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
Who qualifies for flatbed or large truck mulch delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of loose mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll be looking at flatbed or box truck delivery. Most of the time, these are landscapers, Pro customers, or serious DIYers working on a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How can I treat weeds in my vegetable garden?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric to keep them at bay. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off at the surface. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or skin.
Is brown grass dead?
It could be, but it's probably napping during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It turns crispy and brown, but isn't usually dead. You can check to verify though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new grass seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply, but not often. What's the best time to water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, close to sunrise or sunset, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: trees, lawns, and gardens. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your grass type, climate, and lawn health, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.
Does my flower garden need fertilizer?
Once you've gotten your plants settled into the ground, you'll need to make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer to give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Avoid applying more often than recommended. Always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter under a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that chilled air is ready.
What do I need for backyard entertaining?
Backyard entertaining doesn't have to be a barbeque party. If you're focused on firing up the grill, make certain you know how to clean a grill when you're done. Many people simply relax outdoors or cook a meal together in an outdoor kitchen. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free yard without pesky mosquitoes.

Settle Into Summer
As we stretch into the dog days of summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, plants can dry out, grass can get scorched, and trees can lose their leaves early. We've got advice to help you, your garden, and your lawn make it through the hotter months with flying colors.
Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the sod or grass seed you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Eventually, it'll need some maintenance to look fresh and manicured. Keep the lawn in check with a push lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around sidewalks, buildings, or fences.
Bushes, trees, and shrubs climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. They'll be growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Trim wild branches to the size and shape you want with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small branches on trees and bushes.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sun and water. You'll need both to keep plants growing and flowering. Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. To avoid a yard full of mint or other herbs, keep them in decorative plant pots on a porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, perlite, or sand.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near a trellis or an arched arbor so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Choose vine plants that are native to your area. They're a good choice for success and attract pollinators. Jasmine, wisteria, and ivy are common options for creating a stunning pathway or archway. Remember to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun.
