How do I check my USDA planting zone?
Check the USDA plant zone map, as planting zones have changed slightly through the years. Zones with bigger numbers can begin planting earlier in the year. Increase your chances of successful gardening by planting flowers, trees, and vegetables that are meant for your zone.
What are my mulch delivery options and how much do they cost?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on your order size. We can deliver small orders with a car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive mulch jobs, we have a fleet of flatbeds and box trucks ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Of course, you can always choose our free in-store pickup option as well, and orders that meet a purchase threshold may qualify for free delivery. Not sure how much you'll need? Check out our mulch calculator to get started. Keep scrolling for details below on mulch delivery via van, car, or truck.
Can I get my mulch order loaded into my truck?
Yes, you're welcome to pick up your mulch yourself. We're also ready to help if you need it. After you buy mulch online with store pickup or purchase it in-store, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An associate can load a small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bagged mulch or bulk mulch, we encourage you to choose delivery.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Yard mulch, also called bulk or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
What size mulch order gets flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of loose mulch, you'll be looking at box truck or flatbed delivery. Often, these are serious DIYers, Pro customers, or landscapers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How can I treat weeds in my vegetable garden?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off at ground level. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear thick rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or your skin.
How do I fix burned grass?
You'll need to rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within a week. On the other hand, the method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new sod, grass seed, or patch and repair grass seed.
Is there an ideal time to water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: lawns, trees, and gardens. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the ideal time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your grass type, lawn health, and climate, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.
Should I fertilize my plants?
Once you've got your plants in the ground, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that suits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that chilled air is ready.
What's a quick backyard makeover I can do?
Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full patio makeover or create your own patio conversation sets from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. New outdoor lounge furniture, rugs, or even outdoor string lights can breathe new life into a patio.

Set Up For Summertime
As summer stretches on, your landscaping and garden will weather more sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, shade, and proper tending. Just like we can get sunburned, grass and plants can dry out, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to help you, your garden, and your lawn sail through the hotter months with flying colors.
Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the sod or grass seed you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Get it looking fresh again with a little TLC. Keep the lawn in check with a riding lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around sidewalks, buildings, or fences.
Bushes, shrubs, and trees climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with blooms and buds before you know it. Trim wild branches to the size and shape you want with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small branches on trees and bushes.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sun and water. You'll need both to keep plants growing and spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system can get the job done. You don't need to water the blooms themselves. Many flowers wilt and droop when they get wet, but they’ll recover once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific succulent types to optimize their care.
In addition to watering, keep an eye on your plants' nutrient intake. Use plant food and fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll get the right nutrients.
Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem. Fasten the plant to a fence, pole, or trellis with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. That way, the stem has room to grow wider, and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze.
Strawberries, watermelon, squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of string, a sling, old nylons, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room between plants or fit even more of them.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Choose vine plants that are native to your area. They attract pollinators and are a good choice for success. Grape vines are a classic option, but they take time to mature, so you'll only be enjoying shade and not fruit for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
