Which planting zone am I in?
Check the USDA plant zone map, as planting zones have changed through the years. Zones with bigger numbers can start their garden earlier in the year. Choose plants that are intended for your area and increase your odds of successful gardening.
How do I get my mulch?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. For small orders, we can deliver via car for a $3 fee. As orders get bigger, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For the largest jobs, we have a fleet of box trucks and flatbeds ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. What if I want to pick up the mulch myself?
Yes, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. We're also ready to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate can load your small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk yard or bagged mulch, we encourage you to choose delivery.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Loose mulch orders, also called yard or bulk mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may get free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for large truck or flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of bulk yard mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll qualify for flatbed or box truck delivery. Most of the time, these are serious DIYers, Pro customers, or landscapers working on a major landscaping project. There's usually a delivery fee and minimum pallet order. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I get rid of weeds?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off at ground level. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or lungs.
Is my lawn dead?
It could be, but it's also likely just napping during those summer temperatures. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just crispy and brown. You can check to verify though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new grass seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply once every week. How often should I water my garden?
If you can water at least once a day, close to sunrise or sunset, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering when it's hottest outside means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: trees, flowers, grass, and gardens. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it when it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration, no matter what time it is. Depending on your lawn health, climate, and grass type, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.
Do my plants need fertilizer?
Once you've got your plants in the ground, make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one intended for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

As summer stretches on, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, plants can dry out, grass can get scorched, and trees can lose their leaves too early. We've got advice to help you, your garden, and your lawn make it through the hotter months with flying colors.
Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass seed or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. You'll need to maintain it so it'll look manicured and fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around fences, buildings, or sidewalks.
Trees, shrubs, and bushes climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. They'll be growing fast, filled with blooms before you know it. Prune them to show off their beauty with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small trees and bushes.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering humming along. A general rule when watering plants and flowers is to water the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will work well. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers droop and wilt when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap part of the plant. Fasten the plant to a trellis, fence, or pole with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. That way, the stem has room to grow wider, and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze.
Cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of string, a sling, old nylons, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room between plants or fit even more of them.
Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Learn how to plant a tree before you shop — whether you're planting deciduous tree saplings, evergreens, or more mature trees.
Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider how deep the taproots go, the full-grown size of the trees you want, and how far the root ball extends outward. Trees will always find the easiest source of water, so be sure to plant them away from your water pipes to avoid roots growing into them. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if disease or a storm weakened them.
