What's my planting zone?
Take a look at the USDA zone map, as planting zones have changed over time. Zones with higher numbers can begin planting earlier in the year. Choose plants that are intended for your zone and up the odds of successful gardening.
What are my mulch delivery options and how much do they cost?
This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you meet a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party, delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders will arrive via car for a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans at a $35 fee, and large orders come to you via flatbed or box truck for a $79 fee.
Do you offer self-pickup for mulch orders?
Yes, if you prefer, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. We're also happy to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch online with store pickup or buy it in-store, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An Orange Apron will load a small or medium mulch order into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk yard or bagged mulch, you'll likely want delivery.
How much does it cost for a small order of mulch to be delivered?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Yard mulch, also called loose or bulk mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
What size mulch order gets flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk yard mulch, you'll be looking at flatbed or box truck delivery. Normally, these are serious DIYers, Pro customers, or landscapers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's usually a delivery fee and minimum pallet order. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
What should I do about weeds in my garden?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape liner to keep them at bay. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off at the surface. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or lungs.
Is crispy grass dead?
It could be, but it's probably just napping during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just brown and crispy. You can check on it though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new grass seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply, but not often. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy. We have the lawn care you need for healthy cool-season and warm-season grass.
How often should I water my garden?
If you can water at least once a day, close to sunrise or sunset, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering when it's hottest outside means much of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: lawns, gardens, and trees. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it if it's not the ideal time. The plants still need water to live, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to add a lawn fertilizer.
How do I fertilize my plants?
Once you've gotten your plants into the soil, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer that suits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one specially formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter beneath a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.
What do you carry for backyard entertaining?
Backyard entertaining doesn't have to be a BBQ party. Some focus on the grill or fire pit, while others concentrate on yard games. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat away the afternoon. However you bond, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free yard without pesky mosquitoes.

Set Up For Summertime
As we stretch into the dog days of summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more heat than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, shade, and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, trees can lose their leaves prematurely, grass can get scorched, and plants can dry out. We can help. At The Home Depot North Avenue Garden Center, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.
Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that looks yellow. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn, or plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll discover it once you move something sitting in the yard, like a sprinkler. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you must replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.
Whether you’re doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bare spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care to it. Match the grass type to how much sun your lawn gets — or to the existing grass type if you're doing patch repair. For example, if your lawn gets plenty of strong sunlight, make sure you plant full sun grass seed instead of a type that prefers shade or dappled sun.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Make sure to water your garden. That's the way to keep it going between rainstorms to enjoy the summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will work well. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers droop when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine once they dry off. Succulents are the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific succulent varieties to optimize their care.
In addition to watering, keep an eye on the nutrients your plants are getting. Apply fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the types of plants you're growing so they'll get the right nutrients.
Grow Your Own Herbs
Get fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce and spice up your mealtimes when you add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance and grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden. Check out our herb gardening for beginners guide for more info.
Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. Avoid a yard of volunteer herbs when you just keep them in decorative plant pots on a porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which doesn't use soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, perlite, or rock chips.
Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the appearance of your yard. Whether you plant an accent tree or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree — whether they're deciduous tree saplings, evergreens, or more mature trees.
Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider how deep the taproots go, how far the root ball extends outward, and the full-grown size of the trees you want. Plant your trees far from plumbing pipes, as their strong roots will seek water and creep into piping to get it. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider where and how they'd fall if disease or a storm weakened them.
If you've carefully planned, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze as soon as possible.
