Our associates partner with a third-party to help you get started on your outdoor project by delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders will arrive via car for a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans at a $35 fee, and large orders come to you via box truck or flatbed at a $79 fee.
Can I get my mulch order loaded into my truck?
Yes, if you prefer, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. Even better, we're ready to help if you need it. After you buy mulch online with store pickup or purchase it in-store, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. One of our associates will load your small-to-medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk or bagged mulch, we encourage you to choose delivery.
Does The Home Depot deliver mulch?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Yard mulch, also called bulk or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
What size mulch order gets flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of bulk yard mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll get box truck or flatbed delivery. Often, these are landscapers, serious DIYers, or Pro customers working on a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How can I treat weeds in my vegetable garden?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off at ground level. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator and durable rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or lungs.
Is my grass dead?
It could be, but it's probably napping during those sizzling temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just brown and crispy. Here's how you can check on it: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply once every week. How often should I water the lawn?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: gardens, trees, lawns, and flowers. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it when it's not the best time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your lawn health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to add a lawn fertilizer.
Does my flower garden need fertilizer?
Once you've got your plants into pots or the ground, you'll need to make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Avoid applying more often than recommended. Always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. Settle Into Summer
As we stretch into the dog days of summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, shade, and proper tending. Just like we can get sunburned, trees can lose their leaves prematurely, grass can get scorched, and plants can dry out. We can help. Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has a distinctively shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight, or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll discover it once you move something sitting in the yard, like a sprinkler or garden hose. Mirrors or car windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water scorched grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by pet behavior or extreme wear, you'll have to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.
Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care to it. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if trees or buildings shade your lawn so it gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant sun or shade grass or part sun grass that's not meant for full sun.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're watering your vegetable garden, don't forget about the trees and shrubs. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get parched and dry in the summer heat. It's not difficult to learn how to water trees and bushes — just make sure you aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and prevent it from turning yellow or brown. Also, check for damage on the trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery.
Look for holes in leaves, spots on bark or leaves, or strange raised scars on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as they may end the life of your tree or shrub.
Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many veggie plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap those parts of the plants. Fasten the plant to a trellis, pole, or fence with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. That way, the stem has room to grow wider, and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze.
Cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room between plants or fit even more of them.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Set up vines to climb an arched arbor or trellis to provide both shade and beauty. Vine plants native to your area are a good choice for success and for attracting pollinators. Wisteria, jasmine, and ivy are common options for creating a stunning archway. Remember to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as some prefer full sun and others don't.
