      Answer This Question

Kelly, thanks so much for reaching out! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray Paint is not designed to be applied directly to resin material. It is recommended to first apply Rust-Oleum Universal Bonding Spray Paint. Then apply your coats of paint. As always, a test application should be done to ensure the desired outcome is achieved. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Gray-Flat-Universal-Bonding-Primer-Aerosol-Spray-Case-of-6-330491/331534338 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

How long should I wait before sanding this paint between coats?
              ByApr 23, 2026
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

We're happy to clarify this for you, Mark. We do not recommend sanding Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray Paint between coats, unless you have a drip or run that needs to be fixed. Spray 2-3 light coats a few minutes apart for best results. If you do have to sand to fix something, wait until you can get a dry sand before fixing it. After sanding, it's important to wait 48 hours before applying another coat. This waiting period will allow time for any paint that hadn't cured to finish drying. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Pianist was defective. It sprayed out in chunks, and when it finally came out smooth, it foamed up and cracked.

The quality of the Rust-Oleum brand is unmatched, especially when applied to metal objects. I would recommend this product to anyone who would like to enjoy a long lasting coverage and a smooth brilliant finish. I was able to apply even coats on my restoration of a pneumatic nail gun and it came out beautiful. I'm only disappointed that I couldn't attach a photo of the finished product. Thank you. ?

I do so many DIYs it’s probably unhealthy, but this paint hasn’t really stuck out to be what is promised, I have this table I finished about 2 months ago, no liquids or sprays have been on it and this is what it looks like. this is 100% wood, I did the prep properly believe me! Also I have a 2 year old that caused those chips, a two year old. I don’t think this would be a good outside paint for any table or rocking chair or anything Outside.

Thank you for the feedback on Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray Paint. For best adhesion to bare wood, prime first with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Spray Primer.
Please note that full durability and adhesion to some surfaces can take up to 7 days, so we don't recommend testing for adhesion or putting the painted object back into full use before then.

The pic is of the final painted bare set without cushions. We picked this color because another reviewer's pic of a painted similar table. It's like a flat very dark brown taupe which was the original color of this outdoor metal table set. My husband and I first sanded the rusted areas with 220 and those areas got an extra spray of the primer and paint. We first used 2 coats of Rust-Oleum universal gray spray primer. The set has 2 coats of paint, but the more rusted items have 3 coats. The paint doesn't go far. We had to get several 6-pks and they had to be shipped. The set was painted with a week of drying time before the 2nd (and 3rd) coat. We stored the pieces in the garage and shed at night to avoid dew. It seemed to work better to paint the underside first for each coat and then turn the items over and finish the topside. This way any smudges or slight sticking to the cardboard would not be on the top. A few times we had some overspray, especially in the corners, so we let it dry and very lightly sanded the spots and lightly sprayed again. Best thing is to keep moving and shaking the can as you paint so it doesn't drip in spots. We unscrewed the seat netting before painting the chairs, (the netting was not painted). It's a good idea to do this if you have a similar set-up. The coat doesn't look semi-gloss to me. It looks flat. I wish it was a little glossier because of when we wipe after spills. I wanted to post more pics, but this review would not allow it. The color can vary a little in and out of the sun. It looks like a creamy dark taupe in the sun and most of time like the pic, it looks like a very dark brown taupe. We painted on the best days this summer, the temp was around 70 and clear. The only thing is it was little bug season, and they were sticking all over. They're a pain to pick off (used tweezers), so we used fans to deter them. Overall, we are pleased how it came out. If the weather would cooperate, we'd like to use this table set.

Fluorescent Pink isn't pink. It's orange. Don't waste your money.
Fluorescent Pink is not pink at all. It's orange/red. I painted an old wicker chair and so perhaps that was part of the problem? Also paint takes forever to dry and it's splotchy. Bummed. Wasted $25.

Hi, Amy! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray Paint in Gloss Poppy Pink should be a bright pink, but not fluorescent. It is important to vigorously shake the can for at least 1 minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle before pressing the nozzle. Shake often throughout the application to make sure that the pigments are thoroughly mixed to achieve the correct color. If that doesn't help, please call our team at 800-481-4785 for further assistance.

I used this clear coat to preserve the fresh Lagoon Blue finish on a vintage cantilever swing set I recently refurbished, and I have to say—it delivered just what I needed. The spray went on evenly without clouding or yellowing the color beneath, which was crucial for showcasing the vivid blue. It dried to a durable gloss that brought a subtle sheen to the surface without being overly shiny—just enough to highlight the character of the vintage metal without turning it into something it’s not. I also appreciated the quick drying time and smooth application—no clogging, sputtering, or uneven coverage, even over multiple angles and curves of the swing set's frame. The finish has held up well so far against the elements, giving me confidence that the refurbished look will last. Overall, this protective enamel was a solid final step in bringing a nostalgic piece back to life. If you’re sealing a paint job you’re proud of, especially on metal, this clear coat does the job with class.
