Questions & Answers

Does this filler primer contain hardener, and it compatible with urethane base coat paint? Wait time for top coat? Trying to avoid shrinkage in my top coat
ByFeb 18, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Eddy, thanks for reaching out! Rust-Oleum Automotive Filler Primer Spray does not contain a hardener. It’s a single‑component, oil‑based filler primer suitable for compatibility with most topcoats. Once applied, you can safely topcoat anytime after about 10 minutes. As always, we recommend testing the product on a small area first to make sure you achieve the desired results. Additionally, since you’ll be applying a urethane topcoat, we can suggest to check with the urethane paint manufacturer to ensure it is suitable for use over an oil‑based primer. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Do I really have to wait 24 hours to topcoat with acrylic paint or can I topcoat as soon as the primer is dry?
    ByDec 2, 2025
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

We're happy to clear things up. Rust-Oleum Automotive Filler Primer Spray can be recoated or top coated 10 minutes after you finish applying the previous coat. There are some applications like using acrylic paints for model building where we would recommend allowing the primer to fully cure for 24 hours before painting. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

How is this different from 2-in-1 filler and sandable 260510?

        Answer This Question

We're happy to clarify this for you, Roger! The Rust-Oleum Automotive Filler Primer 249279 is a high build formula that fills in surface imperfections and can be used on metal, wood, and fiberglass surfaces. The Rust-Oleum Automotive 2-in-1 Filler and Sandable Primer 260510 provides a primer coat that is easier to sand. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Would this work to fill the grain on old oak cabinets before painting them?

          Answer This Question

Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Automotive Filler Primer is suitable for use on metal, wood, and fiberglass surfaces. It dries to the touch in 10 minutes. When dry to the touch, the surface can be immediately re-coated, top coated or wet sanded. For best results, allow to dry 2–4 hours before dry sanding. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Can filler primer be used on galvanized metal?
            ByMay 20, 2025
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Thank you for your interest, Joey! Rust-Oleum Automotive Filler Primer Spray cannot be used on galvanized metal. Since the primer is alkyd base and does not respond well to the zinc in galvanized metal, overtime it will cause the primer to peel. Instead, we can recommend Rust-Oleum Automotive Universal Bonding Primer Spray. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Automotive-12-oz-White-Universal-Bonding-Primer-Spray-6-Pack-286793/206365322 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Can this be used on a fiberglass pool slide?
              ByMay 2, 2025
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Good question, Mike. We would not recommend using the Rust-Oleum Automotive Filler Primer on a fiberglass pool slide because those usually have water running down them constantly while they are in use. With that type of water exposure, the primer could begin to bubble and start to peel. Currently, we do not have a primer suitable for that application. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Can this be applied to bare steel or do I need to use a self etching primer first?
                ByJan 23, 2025
                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

Happy to answer that for you, Kory! Rust-Oleum Automotive Filler Primer can be applied directly to bare steel. You do not need to use the self-etching primer. Make sure the steel is clean and dry, and lightly sand any glossy surfaces. This primer is very good. APplies a great thickness, not too thick but a nice first layer. We sprayed the primer twice. Used it to prime a couple of work vises for painting. Have not applied paint over the vises yet. I wish I could so I can upload those photos.

I used the Rust-Oleum automotive primer on the motor cowling for my Honda outboard before painting, Highly recommend it as it was easy to use and provided a great primer coat (2) before applying paint.

                  Excellent for prepping 3D prints
I got this to try it out to smooth my 3d prints made from PLA, and it works even better than I'd hoped. It does take a lot of layers and some fine grit sandpaper, but with patience you can get a lovely smooth surface that's perfect for painting or for mold making. The downside is that it uses a lot of primer to finish the models I printed, so I already need to buy more. But the price is decent

This is the best bottom coat for wood. Most other primers can leave the woodgrain showing, but this one makes it disappear - perfect especially if you want it to look like something else! I'm not wild about the color so usually use another gray over it.
