Q:Can Rustoleum Professional flat grey primer spray be used with Rustoleum Stops Rust Black spray on an in home hot water cast iron radiator? The paint seems appropriat per Rustoleum advice, but I'm inquiring about this primer. Thank you!

A:  Great question, Anne! While Rust-Oleum Professional Flat Grey Primer and Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel are compatible to be applied with one another. Neither of these are meant to withstand temperatures over 200° F, if your radiator gets hotter than this, we would not recommend applying either of these products as the paint will blister and peel. Most home radiators will not exceed these temperatures, but we recommend that you check prior to application. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

        Q:I?m seeking clarity for topcoat instructions after priming. Just so I understand, the first color topcoat must be applied EITHER in less than 1 hour OR more than 48 hours after priming? Also, would you suggest this or Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer more?

        A:  Happy to help, Vinny. Rust-Oleum Professional Flat Gray Spray Primer, as well as our Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer Spray, are both excellent choices for priming clean metal. The best way to apply our spray paints is two or more light coats, a few minutes apart. If a primer, top coat and clear are being used, these should all be applied in that same manner, waiting a few minutes between products. If any are applied after 1 hour or before 48 hours, the solvent in the new coat can (and most likely will) dissolve the film (skin) that has formed, possibly causing the surface to wrinkle. Sanding also breaks the film, so this can produce the same results. At cooler temperatures, or with heavier application, the 48 hours would be extended. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

          This is excellent paint for advertised use. As long as it's used as directed. You can prime and topcoat in one setting, if its done within recoat window. If not, you have to wait 48 hours between coats, but I love it.

                Oh no, this is not what we like to hear! It's important to shake the can of Rust-Oleum Professional Gray Primer Spray for at least one minute once the mixing ball begins to rattle and throughout application to ensure that the pigment is evenly dispersed and to prevent clogging. If the tip does clog, you may remove it and rinse it in mineral spirits to loosen up any dried paint.
