What is the best way to join/butt several of these together?

I have four 4' dowel rods that I want to join into one 16' dowel rod. They will not be carrying any weight. A 16' dowel rod is required for my son's hockey shooting tarp (to weigh down the bottom) and when we put the 4 individual pieces in the bottom of the tarp it becomes a pain to roll it up. One 16' piece would make this much easier. Someone had suggested a sleeve that both ends would slide into but I can't seem to find anything like that. Thank you for your suggestions.

I would like to use it to make a gymnastics bar for my daughter to practice on.

From a search on google, you should make such bars from a 2" oak or maple hardwood dowel.
