Product Overview

This simple tread kit is the perfect solution to restore an old and worn staircase to a vibrant new shine. Without affecting the existing staircase structure, these treads and risers are installed directly over top of the existing stairs. This lends to a perfect project for Do-It-Yourselfers that won't disrupt day-to-day living. It can be completed in as little as one weekend. The treads and risers have a beautiful consistent oak surface which can be stained or varnished to compliment your decor. This kit can be used as is for a closed stringer staircase (ends of treads are hidden by stringers). For an open stringer staircase, use simple tread bullnose cap to easily finish off any exposed edges.
  • Unfinished oak surface-stain or varnish to compliment decor
  • All-inclusive kit-includes stair tread and riser
  • Can be cut to fit many sizes of existing stairs
  • Can be sanded and finished multiple times
  • For interior use only

The fit and quality was good from one step to the next. The stain took to the engineered oak very well. I cut to size, labeled, stained and applied 5 coats of polyurethane before installing due to heavy expected traffic including a large dog

The Perfect Update to Old Stairs
I live in a home built in 2000 and for some unknown reason the previous owner had a very short carpeted tread on these stairs. They have vexed me from the day I moved in 4 years ago. I ordered this product hoping it would at least help a bit. WOW, what a dramatic change...tread is now 11.5" and are stout. My knees hurt much less when walking down them now. This product looks and installs as it is described and is well made. I am extremely happy with this product and you will be too.

I am so thrilled with my phase 1 finished project. I purchased each step individually and when I had a whole set of steps, I pulled the carpet and did the job with my 13 year old son. I was so excited. It looks great!

I gave this product 2 stars because I only have an issue with 1 step so far. However, I feel like I wasted a lot of hours on a product that only lasted 3 months. We bought these to replace our carpeted steps. The first half of our steps we were able to buy 100% oak retro treads, the lower 6 our steps we bought these for the length (that had to be ordered from Seattle to Alaska) under the impression that they were 100% real oak steps. To my disappointment I found out they are only oak veneer on top of plywood. They did not take stain well but eventually I was able to make it work. Fast forward 3 months and one of the treads veneers has started to come off the plywood in the middle of it and on outer edge. I am incredibly upset over this because with the cost per step, I expected this to last for years, not months. Hopefully this does not happen to the other steps but I am at a loss for what to do to repair the step to keep the veneer on. I suggest investing in a real oak retro tread if you want steps that will last years.

This was a very easy material to work with. I used 1 coat red mahogany stain and used Bona one mega wood finish 3 coats. Just removed carpet, reworked stairs for level and for fitting and removal of nose, eliminating as many noises as possible. Cut risers as retread to fit and finish and installed with brad gun and loctite premium glue.

The treads and risers were very simple to install and finished pretty nicely for the price. The only complaint I had was the grain raised a fair amount in the staining and poly process, but I think it would have been better with an oil instead of water based product. I would use these on future stair projects on a budget.
