Great Flexibility and 3-part handle
The look is good -- there's something about a green rake that just has the right motivation! The handle is comfortable. The tines of the rake are flexible and work well in raking leaves, mulch and other cleanup.
Having the rake handle come in 3 parts seemed like it wouldn't hold well -- but it goes together strongly, so that I could immediately put it to work in the fall cleanup.
Some assembly required (5 minutes) but well worth it
I have used Ames tools for over 50 years and have always found them to be sturdy and well made. I was a little skeptical when I saw this Ames/True Temper rake online because of the “some assembly required” description. It arrived in a medium sized flat box which didn’t do anything to reduce my anxiety. When I opened the box and read the excellent directions for assembly I was relieved to find that it would only take about 5 minutes to put together and required no tools. Assembling the handle was very simple using the directions included. All that’s required is to line up the groove in the middle handle with the tab on each end handle and tap it on the floor a few times. That pretty much locks the handle together. Then insert the handle into the business end of the rake and fasten it with the wingnut and curved square washer and you’re ready to go. Raking was easy with the 22 tines firmly fastened to the rake base. I’m looking forward to many years of use just like I have had with previous Ames tools.
This was easy to use and functioned better than my poly leaf rake. The tines flexed to move the leaves properly and didn't break. I also used this to move mulch around on a hill where the dogs pushed it down. It moved that very well. This is lightweight so it isn't exhausting after several hours of work. When we raked the leaves the other day, my seven year old used this rake and enjoyed working with it. He didn't have any problems with the weight. It arrived unassembled in a box. It was easy to put together. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to purchase.
This is a sturdy rake that comes in a small box. I didn't realize the handle required assembly and was skeptical at first. The handle goes together pretty easily and I didn't having any problems with the handle coming apart during raking. I wouldn't plan to regular assemble and disassemble though.
The rake is sold under two brands: "Ames" and "True Temper". As far as I can tell, they are identical. One is green and the other is black.

Ames Brand, 54 in. 22-Tine Hardwood/Steel Handle Steel Leaf Rake is easy to assemble and comes in a surprisingly compact box made possible by a three-piece section handle. I found the handle easy to assemble following the included instructions. In fact, my body weight alone was sufficient to press all three pieces of the handle together without hammering or pounding. The rake head its self is fully assembled. The assembled handle is then attached to the rate head with a single bolt and wingnut that is finger tightened. While leaf season in some regions now, we have only Coastal Live Oak trees that are evergreen oak trees. So, they don’t drop leaves all at once. Only a few now and then. We do however shred and chip the oak branches for mulch having many trees. The Ames brand rake does a very good job of spreading our homemade mulch, creating a very nice even layer.
Ideal for large yards and big jobs, the AmesIdeal for large yards and big jobs, the Ames Collector Series leaf rake features an innovative head and large basket design to help gather more leaves in less time. The rake's lightweight materials minimize fatigue.View Full Product Description
