Questions & Answers

I am drywalling a basement and adding a drop ceiling. Which should be done first?

Asked by: Patty
Hi Patty. Get the walls done first because you'll need to snap a line around the perimeter to start hanging the hardware. Keep in mind how far down to install the ceiling from the floor joists in the event you're adding light fixtures or heating ducts as your ceiling should be at least 90 inches from the floor. :-)

On a 8x8 (64sqft) room, the length of wall molding required is 4 x 8 = 32 ft, but this kit only come with 30 ft molding. How is this enough?
Asked by: DIYApprentice
Hello, All of our kits should have enough molding in them at this point. You may have received an older kit that did not have the extra piece added. You can either purchase 1 extra piece of wall molding or take the kit back to the place of purchase. This issue should have been corrected about a year ago so all new boxes should have the correct square footage of wall molding.

If I want to install as close to the joists as possible, shouldn't I use the 6 inch hooks and not the 12 inch hooks supplied in this kit? Description makes it seem like I can use 12 inch hooks, but Armstrong website suggests using the 6 inch hooks.
Asked by: Tim
Hello Tim, If you are trying to make your suspended ceiling very close to your joists, you would want to use the 6" hooks not the 12" hooks.

I want to hang a ceiling light from the ceiling system. What electrical box would I use with the cross bars?
Asked by: MikeP
Hey Mike, buy the standard round electrical box (blue plastic kind). Buy enough 2 x 3 wood to "block" or to support the cross bars. Install the 2 x 3's in a way that the cross bars can be fastened to it-making sure the round box sticks out no more than 1/2 inch from the ceiling. The tough/main part of the job is to be sure your measurements for placement is not close to the grids, as the fixture needs to be close to the center of the ceiling tile.
