Will weed brew kill my ajuga?
    ByMar 10, 2025
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Captain Jack's Deadweed Brew kills on direct contact with plant acids. It burns the foliage. The solution must be applied thoroughly to be effective. Desirable plants should be protected from over spray or drift to prevent damage, however light drift will generally not kill well established plants. Often speckling on the leaves will occur to non-target plants that accidentally get a little solution on them.

will this product adversely affect roses if sprayed in a rose garden?
      ByFeb 21, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Potentially, since safety of use is in the hands of the applicator. Captain Jack's Deadweed Brew burns green growth that comes into contact with the solution. The product can be used to carefully spot treat weeds in a garden bed. If spot treating, open the spray nozzle slightly for a larger droplet size to reduce drift while keeping the spray nozzle low to prevent over spray onto desirable plants. Accidental over spray can be rinsed off desirable plants.

Can this be used in a rhubarb patch to kill grass, dandelions and a creeping viney grass? Will it harm the rhubarb plant?
          ByMay 22, 2024
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

If you don't get it on the rhubarb plant, it should be fine. It does not act systemically, it burns only the leaves it is applied to. You can put something over the desirable plants to protect them from overspray.

                  Not the most effective
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This Captain Jack's Deadweed Brew only burns what it touches (i.e. the foliage), and does not kill the roots of the weed, so I don't really know if it is a better use of my time than simply pouring boiling water on the weeds. On the bright side, it is fairly economical, in the sense that you only need about an ounce or two of concentrate to fill a BIG 32 ounce (1 quart or a quarter gallon) spray bottle. It's just that you'll be spraying every week from now until the end of time, since the weeds remain completely healthy and viable below the surface. I just don't know if the results are superior to boiling water.

                    Great weed killer
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This works really great! We sprayed Ana and n a couple of days the weeds were dead and easy to pull out and get rid of. If you have annoying weeds this is the product to buy to get them gone! Buy it, it’s worth it !

The weeds were gone fast on my driveway and crevices. The lawn looks so much better. I dodnt have weeds keep growing in my grass. Finally a product that works on weeds.

                        Very excited
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I get weeds around my vegetables and I've always been afraid to use a weed killer for fear of killing my plants. I recently used Captain Jack's Deadweed Brew Concentrate and my vegetables are still alive. And those weeds are getting what they deserve.

It's okay, but not sure I'd recommend it.
This stuff works okay. It doesn't really get rid of dandelion or really established weeds. Takes multiple applications to get rid of established weeds. Don't waste your time applying it at all if the temps aren't above 55 or 60. If its slightly cool out, I find this spray to be pretty ineffective. I do like that it's got more natural ingredients so I don't feel like I'm spraying things as bad as round-up. But, with the amount of applications I have needed, and I still have all my dandelions, I wonder if 1 application of round-up would have been better for the earth than 5 or 6 of the Dead Brew.

Smells terrible and it doesn't do the job...
I purchased this product early in June with the high hopes of eliminating some weeds that had sprouted after a landscaping firm had mechanically removed the vegetation in early April. I mixed the solution as directed and sprayed the vegetation (making sure to wet all of the leaves). The smell afterward was unpleasant (to say the least) After a couple of days, the weeds were still growing so I wrote to Bonide describing the condition and provided pictures of the site. I asked about the odor and the oily residue on the spraying equipment. They responded that they didn't have any suggestions about the odor and suggested Dawn dishwashing detergent for cleaning. I had suggested that perhaps the reason the product didn't work well was that it might not be mixing well with water. They noted that the weeds were mature and might need a second application and that a few drops of Dawn might improve the mixing. I tried that and the results were less than impressive. I'm glad I gave the product a try, but I don't anticipate that I'll purchase any more of it.

I usually use glyphosate as my broad-spectrum herbicide. I decided to try Captain Jack’s Deadweed Brew to see if it is a worthy alternative. The fact that it’s approved for use in organic gardening had no bearing on my decision to try it. · The SDS for Deadweed Brew lists caprylic acid and capric acid as the primary ingredients. I wasn’t able to find these chemicals listed among the ingredients for modern herbicides. Both ingredients are naturally occurring as well as being produced for industrial uses. My guess is that the herbicide works by destroying the top growth of the plants on which it is applied. · There are three recommended concentrations for application. I mixed a 6% solution to use on the weeds and grass growing in the mulch beds in my yard. I used a handheld one-quart-size sprayer to apply the herbicide. I took photos of some of the treated plants before application and two days later. The herbicide began to de-foliate the Wild Violet within 24 hours of application. After two days, most of the Wild Violet had completely disappeared and the moss was brown and dying. Some plants such as Orchardgrass required a week's time before showing browning of the foliage. · Deadweek Brew has a strong pungent smell that lingers for about a day after application. I wore gloves during mixing and application but I smelled Deadweed herbicide the rest of the day. Some of the mist must have landed on my clothing. The fact that the herbicide has this foul smell affected my overall rating of the product. · Made in USA.

Highly effect Captain Jack's BONIDE 32 OZ. DEADWEED BREW CONCENTRATE. I extend beds by killing grass and weeds and this chemical does the trick effectively. I also continually get weeds around bed edges and spray when needed and this brew concentrate works great. Takes a few days for the weeds to die. Some crabgrass has very deep roots and can take several days for the weeds to die. Recommend if you have weeds to kill or grass areas.

We have a fourth acre devoted to our vegetable garden. Small stone was placed between garden beds for clean walkways. Even though we removed all the sod before laying stone, we've fought weeds and tough grasses. I don't like using poison weed killers at all. The dog and cats roam the area, and we really don't want to harm pollinators. This Deadweed weed control touts its organic ingredients, so we decided to try it. Two days after I sprayed, weeds are showing significant wilt. I'm not seeing plants browning up, but we had an unexpected rain shower early yesterday. I'm amazed the spray had time to even wilt the weeds! It's not clear in the picture but these weeds were all upright two days ago, and are now starting to lay over. The concentrate really goes a long way. I can spray our garden walkways with 1 gallon of the mixture. One side note: the concentrate is pretty smelly, sort of like wet dog. Small price to pay for finding a decent organic herbicide!

The Bonide brand, 32 oz. Deadweed Brew Concentrate is a fast acting non selective vegetation killer. My interest in trying the Deadweed Brew Concentrate was to kill Morning Glory. And Deadweed Brew Concentrate used at maximum concentration did work better than anticipated and better than systemic weedkillers I have used previously. I also tired it on ivy with less than satisfactory results with a single application at full strength. Likely two or three applications would have been required and then the roots might have still been active as it does not appear to be a systemic weed killer based on using it on Ice Plant. It did kill the ice plant where contacted. However, ice plant not contacted was unaffected unlike a systemic weed killer. Regular weeds in the sun were dead and brown in 24-hours. The same weeds in the shade not so much after a week’s time. My take away is that Deadweed Brew requires sunlight and warmth to work well. The ivy in the shade was likely less impacted by being shaded. Photos are split. Top half before Deadweed Brew and bottom half, after.
