A: The wire compost bin does not have a door per say. It consists of four wire squares that attach together, you can detach one of the squares to open an close.

Q:Is it open around the sides? If so, doesn't the dirt/compost fall out or wash out when it rains?

A: I am a volunteer at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens and I work at the Compost Outpost there where we generate all of the compost for the Garden's Backyard Vegetable Garden. We have 25 compost bins working all the time. They are similar to this product, but a little bigger. When you layer your green and brown materials, and water them down heavily while assembling the pile, they start breaking down quickly and do not spill out through the mesh.

A: Good Morning, Yes it is open on the sides, to keep the compost materials from washing out during rainy days, one must stir the compost packing it in flat.

Advice from a long time user:

If you assembled the bin with the HOOKS pointing DOWN, then access the contents by removing a side that HAS the hooks on it. If the bin is assembled with the HOOKS pointing UP, then access the contents by removing a side that DOES NOT HAVE hooks on it. The side that will be removed should not be pinned to the ground. I turn a full bin by standing on a stool beside the bin and using the Tumbleweed Compost Aerator.
