I have the same valve which is in need of replacing. Is it easy to replace it?

No it is not easy to replace. Removing the valve from the attached fitting requires two wrenches and a lot of work. Then you have to doubly make sure it doesn't leak. To avoid the leaking problem. (Since the old valve is already installed) I usually just take out the handle and stem and put the new handle and stem from the new valve in its place. Make sure the black gasket is still attached to the stem. If not you will have to remove the gasket out of the old valve body. If not already in place I will put in a new flex hose. These are quick to install and I have never had one leak on me. I can usually do this in about 15 minutes.

Can the guts be removed completely for sweating?

Greetings, I normally do not use this valve except for replacement parts. Recently I was at a lodge and two of these type were older valves and the handles broke off in my hand. The plastic stems break over time. Not very effective. At the lodge I replace about 24 of this type of valve with the 1/4 turn valves. I am now replacing these type of valves with the 1/4 turn valves. Otherwise, I take out he handle and stem from these valves and put them into already installed valves. It is very efficient, when I am in a hurry, but not a cost savings. I would like it, if the company would just sell the stem and handle separately. It would save me a few dollars. Otherwise I throw the valve's body away. Wasteful. I used two of these valves at my home and took out the old stem and handle and replaced them into the old valve. Much quicker. (picture attached) In the future I will replace this type of valve in my home with the 1/4 turn valve. I normally replace the this valve with the 1/4 turn valve. Hope this helps.

Hello Taz - Thank you for your review. We do have a repair kit for the oval shaped handle - multi turn valves. The part number is BCSR01 and contains the stem, bib washer, bonnet packing and thrust washer. This is available at your local Home Depot store. Do I really need to review something that has been used for decades and hasn't changed hardly at all? The only way these would work better is if they didn't get ridiculously hard to open and close after many years and then immediately spring a leak at that point. Also, they did change a bit, because I tried to swap the guts with the old one so I didn't have to sweat the old valve off and sweat the new one on, but alas, the thread pitch of the valve is slightly different now. :/

Very good thing that you can actually remove the insert before soldering it to the pipe end so there is no chance of heat damage. The bad thing with this one is the plating: it will make it harder to clean up the inside of of the connection so, take your time and do a thorough job, I went one step further, cleaned it up the best I could, then, on the bench I braised it with solder to make sure the internal surface would be fully covered with a thin layer of solder - grab with the plier and do a vigorous shake to clean the excess; do this on the garage/workbench. Then head to the job location and install it. Wait to cool down to room temp to put insert back. Do not use plumbers tape on the compression connection. Do not overtight the insert as it wil make it too hard to turn on or off.
