        A:  the new ones that came with the city pickers planter boxes have drawstrings ( not elastic) as of last year 2018. These were a vast improvement over the 2017 covers, and fit well over the boxes and is a snap to place over the boxes, but really don't hold up too well to weather extremes ( snow, cold, extreme heat ) that we have here in zone 5, so you may look to replace these covers after a year. Having said that, I kept my grow boxes outdoors, covers included, since they were too heavy to move at the end of the season, so if I had been smarter to keep my boxes, or at least the covers, indoors or in a shed, you can probably use them for many years. Keep in mind your planting schematics may change yearly, requiring new slits in the cover. I have tried cutting black landscape fabric and pinning it down with landscaping pins, which is OK and works, I just don't know if it's OK for organic gardening.

          These covers are great for the city pickers planters. They warm the soil, keep heat an moisture in, and also keep the weeds out. I find they last about 2 years. That is why I am glad they came out w/ the covers separately; so I can replace the worn out ones. I was going to tape ground cloth on the ones that had worn out, but am glad I found thre covers.
