Does it come with a cross reference chart for popular fertilizer settings?
Asked by: DIYDAVE
There's a label on the spreader that translates to/from the Scott settings to the settings on this spreader. Most fertilizers and seed list the settings to be used for Scott spreaders or provide a translation table to/from them.

Can this be used to spread lime?
Asked by: Val
Yes, you can use pelletized lime in this spreader. Once you are done applying the lime, we recommend to empty the spreader and rinse the hopper thoroughly. The rotary mechanism after some usage wouldn’t spin properly. I paid more for this unit thinking I would get a heavier duty spreader but it is a more cheaply made unit with a high price. Very disappointed.

I have a 1970 square ft yard and this baby covers it with ease with no need for a refill. I just used it to spread my first spring round of fertilizer and it did it with ease. The handle bar was comfortable and at a good height. I was worried since I'm 6'3" that it would be a little to low, but it wasn't. The large wheels made the pushing and the walking easy and smooth. The dial setting was set to a low 1 and it spread the fertilizer evenly. The spinning wheel shot out the fertilizer at least 5 to 6 ft out. It just depended on my walking speed. Needless to say, it did it with ease. I'm sure the spreader is going to work real nice with ice melt next winter. The grill that comes with it will come in handy then when the ice melt clumps up. The only feedback I would give is the deflector shield on the left side. It would be nice if there was one for the front and one for the right side. Other then that I would recommend this to anyone.

It took about 20 mins to assemble and give it a quick test run. Simply unfold the handle, attach two wing nut bolts (provided), attach the spring to the chute door, set the appropriate distribution dial/opening, fill and go. Compared to my traditional (smaller) spreader, this one moved easily through St Augustine grass, handling any dips, tall or slightly wet grass. I was finished in about a third of the time. It's really well made. The hopper is huge. I like the grate in the hopper (separates product from the spinner) allowing me to move unopened bags to location before opening and filling the hopper for spreading (sort of like a mini yard cart to move product around). It has a manual edge guard which prevents product from spreading onto flower beds, driveway, sidewalk, etc. When it's hot and humid in Florida it's nice to have a spreader which saves so much time. I would highly recommend this product.

The spreader is 90% assembled all you need to do add the handle, connect a spring, and a couple of thumb screws. That was a pleasant surprise 10 minutes later and you good to go. The hopper is large enough to handle the large bags of fertilizer or whatever you need to spread. The hopper is made of heavy duty plastic material the handles are steel construction and the tires are large pneumatic and should handle any rough spots in your terrain without a problem. I have a few clumps and bumps in my yard and they were no problems it sailed right over them. This is a welcome addition to my collection of lawn tools and I look forward to years of use this spreader is well made. And it's red which matches my mower so it get an extra star from me.

I often had cheaper lawn spreaders but wanted to upgrade to a spreader that would last longer and work better on my large lawn. This unit is great. It is very sturdy and appears well built with quality materials. Very little plastic except the hopper. No assembly required and I really like that I can fold it up to save shed space between uses. It has a large clear dial to adjust the material being distributed and I like the handy scotts conversion which eliminates the guess work. It does a nice job of spreading my weed feed evenly. The large pneumatic tires make it easy to push across my lawn. This can also be used for rock salt in the winter though I did not try that application. Very nice quality unit that I am sure will last me a long time.

Capacity Residential Turf Spreader looks to be built very good. It took me about 5 minutes to put it together, I rotated the handle up and install a couple of bolts that were included. It was very simple to put the bail lever in and hook up the spring. It has 12" pneumatic tires for stability over uneven terrain which makes it easy to use. It comes with a durable poly hopper so it should last many years. I tried it out today and it works awesome. I'm not sure why they call it a residential spreader this thing holds so much that I can do every house on the block.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 80 lb. Capacity Residential Turf Spreader - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review I don’t have a very... 80 lb. Capacity Residential Turf Spreader - a Home Depot Seeds Program Review I don’t have a very large lawn area and only about half of my one acre lot could actually be called “lawn”. After taking down some trees a few years ago I now have a fair space to try and make grass grow. My primary means for spreading seed and food is a small, hand-held spreader and decided it was time to upgrade the spreader. This Chapin 8200A 80-Pound Residential Turf Spreader is very nice. The hopper is large enough for me to seed a large area without refilling. The gears are sealed from elements and debris and there’s a good screen to keep large objects from going into the chute and impeller. The 12” pneumatic tires go over uneven ground easily and don’t leave ruts in loose soil even when fully loaded. The hopper and screen are a poly material but the rest of the unit is metal. I don’t know if Home Depot has an option to assemble the spreader for you, but DON’T pay for that! The assembly could not be easier and there are only four steps in the documentation. It says the approximate assembly time is 5-10 minutes and it wasn’t kidding. Break down of the spreader is just as easy which makes it far more compact for storage. I’ve only used it for grass seed and fertilizer but the documentation says it can be used for salt and ice melt but I can’t verify that. I did try spreading a little screened topsoil but it didn’t work. I think the moisture in the soil kept it from feeding well. Perhaps if it had been bone dry I would have had better luck. Grass seed spreads evenly and is “agitated” to keep the seed flowing well toward the impeller. The same was true for food granules. There’s an Application Chart in the documentation that includes a conversion chart. You’ll want to keep a copy of this because the application numbers on the Chapin dial are not the same as found on bags of seed and food from product such as Scotts. While the Chapin Spreader seems very well made and spreads seed and fertilizer for me better than my hand-held spreader, I wasn’t prepared for the “sticker shock”. This seems very expensive for what, at least in my case, a pretty limited use item. I expect this Chapin Spreader to last many seasons so I hope the cost will prove itself worthwhile over time.
