"S x S" refers to " Slip (fitting) x Slip (fitting). I.e., not threaded. In plastic fittings this means one will be joining by gluing. In copper or brass plumbing, slip fittings (non-threaded fittings) are soldered - or, in the case of refrigerant lines, brazed. Sometimes in non-ferrous plumbing nomenclature the "S" designation is inferred to mean "sweat" or the designation "SWT" is used for the fitting end type. In ferrous piping, such slip fittings - either socket end or spigot end - would be welded.

do these slip on or screw on?

Used several of these fittings to put "dog leg" jogs in a drain line; both to avoid a downcomer intersecting a foundation, and to steer the buried leader to an existing cistern. The fittings arrived clean and in good condition. They are manufactured to standards. I primed, glued and installed them without issue.
