"S x S" refers to " Slip (fitting) x Slip (fitting). I.e., not threaded. In plastic fittings this means one will be joining by gluing. In copper or brass plumbing, slip fittings (non-threaded fittings) are soldered - or, in the case of refrigerant lines, brazed. Sometimes in non-ferrous plumbing nomenclature the "S" designation is inferred to mean "sweat" or the designation "SWT" is used for the fitting end type. In ferrous piping, such slip fittings - either socket end or spigot end - would be welded.
