We Use the waterproof wire connectors for all our low voltage and irrigation sprinkler valves connections, really any wire nut connections will be done with the waterproof connector regardless if it's inside an outdoor junction box just because of the dampness, Each wire nut is filled with dielectric silicone sealant to help against corrosion, Below I included a picture of a air conditioner condenser that was connected with regular wire nuts. yes I would recommend for all outdoor connections.

Dielectric Silicone Sealant
Anywhere you have wire connections that are exposed to high humidity or moisture, this is a fast, easy and safe solution. Much better than wrapping a huge ball of electrical tape around them. They are only for Copper wire; not Aluminum. They are not reusable. Make sure you align the wires well, before inserting.
If they were cheaper, I would use them for all applications.

Just buy some.
Less than 9 bucks for a pack of 20, if you install outdoor fixtures, low voltage lighting, or do any electrical work in damp locations, you need some of these in your collection. They are filled with a silicone type substance that oozes out and seals the connection when you put the wires in. So much better - and safer - than using standard wire connectors and trying to waterproof with electrical tape.
