Questions & Answers

Is this a good saw for a lady?

would you recommend a lady using this saw?
Asked by: nana
I have been using this model saw for several years. I am 58 years old and will cut 1/2 to 3/4 of a cord of fire wood with this saw in 4 hours. It cuts easily through hard wood and is easy to manage. It is easy to start and work on too. I am actually on my second saw as I gave my first one to my husband. I wouldn't use any other saw.

no it does not. I bought one separately for $30 which houses the saw, a quart of chain oil and misc tools & files.

Asked by: d bassi

how much does it weigh?

Asked by: cr
Dry weight without bar/chain listed at 10.1 lbs. Weight measured with supplied bar and chain is 12.1 lbs. Filling with chain oil and fuel adds another 1.5 lbs, so about 13.5 lbs operational weight with full tanks.

ECHO 18 in. 40.2 cc Gas 2-Stroke Cycle Chainsaw is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1501.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Echo CS-400 Great Chain saw for aggressive homeowner. I have owned and used many other saws. most of the home-owner models are just garbage. I bought this saw and used it to cut 4 cords of hardwood. I had no problems what so ever! I have seen both good and bad reviews on this saw and was a little hesitant. To break in saw I let it Idle for 15-20 minutes day before using the saw the first time. I used premium gas, echo 2 stroke oil, keep the blade sharp and lubed. simple routine and the saw operated perfect! I really like the automotive style filter, very simple and affective. the saw is lighter than husky and stihl. the on/off switch is metal and easy to use with gloves on. the couple of Items I wish were changed is the size of the fuel tank. shorter run time than others...but is a great way to make sure the chain oil reservoir is kept full every time you have to fill gas! I suppose that also keeps the weight down. The 40CC engine is great for most applications but a slightly larger engine would be nice option.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding when it works. The first saw I bought would not start once. I tried for a good 2 hours to get it to start, and I have experience in this from various other gas powered tools. It just would not start. Brought it back and exchanged it for another saw, same model. This one started right away and has been working ever since. Never more than 3 pulls to have it running, usually 2. All the functions of the saw seem to perform well. The brake works fine and only engages when I want it to, the chain tension stays where I set it. I've cut a fair amount of thick tree branches with it and this saw does not hesitate. Anything that the 18" blade is long enough for, the saw will get through. The problems with some of the saws not starting can be observed from other comments as well. When you purchase this saw, try it right away and if you can't get it to start return it right away without messing around too much. You don't want to inadvertently void your warranty/right to exchange.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Understand the SAW I recently purchased a wood burning stove for my home. I needed a smaller chainsaw for working off branches of downed tree's. I do own a Sthil "Farm Boss" which is my go to heavy duty saw. I ended up with a display model CS450 Echo 18". This saw is very light and starts by the second pull. It almost feels like a toy with all the plastic it has. The chain was on backwards? I had too fix that. Then tried it out on some 5-8 inch pines. It performed very well. When working in tight spots it was very managable. I can not say how long it will last? With proper maintenance and being on top of things. My other saw is over 15 years old, and still runing like a champ. If you understand how things work. You can prevent huge problems from the start. Read your manual and follow it to the letter. I like to break things like this Echo chainsaw in slowly. Kinda taking it easy on the saw the first couple times I use it. It seems like a decent saw. Only the test of time will tell?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Saw The Wife and I bought a new house on 6 1/2 acres of Maine woods and had a load of tree length logs delivered. I had a small 14' saw that I had used for some small jobs around the old house. I decided I should upgrade for all the new work I was going to have to get done. I don't think I could have picked a better saw, I have had it for almost 6 months and have used it REGULARLY (3-4 times a week or more). I have chunked up my entire truck load of logs and have dropped and cut up several trees on the property. Out of the box I fueled and oiled and never looked back. Starts cold or hot with no problems, Idles at a whisper. Lightweight and easy to handle. It has handled everything I have attacked with it and come back for more. I have done wood since I was a kid and have used several different saws that my father had, this is the first that I went out and purchased and it has been great. If you want a great saw for a good price, that has been truly tested in the MAINE woods. This is the saw to get

Rated 5 out of 5 by from THANK YOU Echo! I've been trying to get my Craftsman 18" chain saw to start and/or run basically since it was new (5 years old). After another non-starting episode this morning, the Craftsman went in the trash and I took a drive to Home Depot to buy a new chainsaw. I read good things regarding the Echo - especially the 'good starting' - on Home Depot's reviews online, so I decided to buy the Echo 18". Got it home, put the bar oil and 50-1 gas mix in, primed it 4 times till I saw gas in the bulb, set the choke and pulled. Viola, it started, just like you'd hope (and expect). Ran very well - was a tiny bit fussy when warm (but easy to resolve by following the instructions for a hot start - choke, pull once, choke off, pull 2 or 3 times and it was fine). I took down 4 trees and a ton of branches and it never failed to start (or re-start). Excellent cutting performance, lightweight, etc...... Echo - you've just won a new customer. Craftsman, you continue to be on the list of products I won't buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from used buy a professional every day i honestly laughed a my boss when he purchased a couple of these for crew use. we have always used Stihl and every homeowner saw i ever touched was pitiful by comparison. i quickly became aware of the saws durability (been dropped from 30 feet onto lawn and hit by a falling chunk of wood) and ability to preform on a very demanding everyday bases. i use saws up to 5 ft bar for big logs and flush cutting. this saw is lightweight for the power. ive even climbed with this saw while trimming . its not going to replace Stihl in the workplace but i have purchased one for my personal use cause i was soo impressed. and for a groundsman on any tree crew i would definitely recommend this light and powerful alternative. advice to home owners who do own this saw is to change to 16 in bar and to let the saw do the cutting and dont dig in with the cleats to hard. thanks....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from After my old saw took a turn for the worst I decided it was time to replace it. First I went to the local pawn shop to buy specifically Stihl or Echo only. The prices for the used saws there were almost the same price as a new one. A friend then conveinced me to buy a Craftsman. I settled on a 50cc Craftsman with 20 inch bar. I ended up taking it back the same day and then off to the home depot. I bought the biggest Echo they had on the shelf (CS -400-18) for the new season of cutting firewood. I could not be happier. This saw runs circles around the Craftsman. Starts everytime within the first 2-3 pulls. Just make sure you read the manual, and run 91+ octane. Running anything under 91 will void the 5 year warranty. I have cut probably close to 30 cords with this saw and it still runs like its brand new. It is very easy to take apart and clean so you can keep it looking and running like new. The automotive style air filter is another great addition to this already impressive saw. This is a very good product by Echo. I am looking at buying a CS-600 for the bigger trees that the 18 inch bar can't get to.

I had two trees knocked down in my yard, both trees where over 50' high. I thought I just buy this one to cut the limbs off for now, then rent a bigger one to cut up wood. Well after cutting all the limbs off (3) day process and getting them to the dump, I started to just mess around with cutting the wood up. The biggest base I had to cut was 31" round, this chainsaw had no issues cutting this log, matter of fact I keep on cutting the wood. I was out there for 2 solid days cutting up both trees, and never had one issue with this saw. I got close to 3 cores of wood from the two down trees, and all with this 1 and only chainsaw. This saw is well worth the money and very easy to maintain. This is the first echo product I bought, and if the other echo tools are like this one, I will be buying more echo products. Buy it this thing is GREAT...
