A:  Arek, we can't speak to pricing but we can explain the difference between the two posts. First, the poplar ball top landing newel is stainable. We highly recommend testing a scrap piece of poplar post (something you cut from the bottom) with various colors of stain. You may find darker colors work best. Consult with the associates in the Paint Department to find out if a stain conditioner would help with your overall finishing. Now to the differences between the two newels. The price of Red Oak is almost twice that of poplar. Red oak is a finer, harder species of wood that is stain-grade. Poplar is a soft-wood species and is typically paint-grade, but as I explained above, you can stain it. Your price difference is that red oak is more expensive than poplar. It's also heavier and is stain-grade. If you have additional questions, we'll reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.
