Q:Will this drill through large tree roots that are at surface of ground?
by|Jul 29, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Earth augers are not intended to drill through large roots. They will occasionally bust through smaller roots but it generally is very rough on the user. We recommend removing large roots at the surface before drilling a hole.

        Light weight heavy hitter
I live on the Texas Gulf Coast, in land a bit, but the soil here, gumbo they call it, is quite difficult to dig. It’s either too dry and like concrete or too wet and sticks like cold tar to a shovel. This Earthquake 1 man auger, well I was skeptical, after all, it’s rather light weight, and what, with a 43 cc engine, do the math, that’s 4 hundredths of a liter. I follow the directions exactly, 1 teaspoon of oil to 8.25 ounces of gasoline, I just wanted enough to dig one hole today for a post for a sun sail to shade the back porch, but I wanted to see how this auger would run before gearing up to replace 95 feet of fence with a post every 10 feet. I mixed the fuel with the oil and poured it into the tank, pushed the fuel bulb 4 times to prime it, full choke, on the third pull it fired and sputtered and quit; half choke and another pull and it came to life and after a couple of minutes to warm up choke to run. It took all of a minute, I took my time and fed it gradually, and I had a 30” deep post hole, perfectly round, and the gumbo like a giant crawdad’s nest. After I was done I transferred the fuel to a dedicated gas can so labeled 50:1, and started the Earthquake up and ran it empty, keeps the fuel from plugging the jet. I like it. Now to order the fencing.

        Easy To Use Auger
I got this auger, hoping it would be easier to operate than our old heavy one. It has not disappointed. Even my wife can operate it because it is balanced nicely for a lighter feel. It is still a heavyweight and breaks through our rocky soil. I particularly like the fishtail point on the end of the auger, which seems to make it much more efficient and accurate. It is also easy to assemble. It has a five year warranty, too. Overall, this is a great auger.

        Small but capable engine
Earthquake E43 43 cc 1-Man Earth Auger Powerhead with 8 in. Earth Auger Bit. I have a use for post holes mainly when replacing existing rotten post in my yard. I thought I could use this auger to start the whole next to the old post. The first post I tried was close to two big trees so I knew I would encounter roots. The auger quickly snagged and twisted on the surface roots. The auger also got stuck in the roots and had to be pulled free. I tried several times and wrapped my knuckles twice on the old pole. Consequently I switched to my post hole digger to finish the job. The second post was free of roots and was much easier to drill down in the soft ground. The auger bit is only 22” long so I still had to finish with the post hole digger to the 3 foot depth. There is an auger bit extension available. The engine was easy to start and ran quite considering how close it was to my ears. The auger throws the dirt to the sides of the whole but still leaves a lot of dirt in the hole. Several sweeps and dumps helps to clear the hole but still does not leave it clean. The Viper 2-cycle, 43cc engine produces 46.5 ftlbs of torque with a gear ratio of 30:1. The compact engine runs at 250RPM at full throttle and the power head without the auger weighs 22 pounds. With the bit extension in an open field, this auger would make quick work on a fence line. Not so much around a wooded area.

Thank you for your detailed feedback and outstanding rating. The drilling depth on all of our Earthquake augers is 36" and can be extended deeper using our 12" and 18" extensions. Depending on the size of the roots, they will give any auger a problem while drilling and would require assistance using additional tools to remove the roots before continuing to drill. This would be the same for large rocks. As you mentioned, it is a great idea to lift out some of the dirt as you go along so that it is easier to pull the auger back out. We are glad to hear you are overall happy with your Earthquake auger. If you should need any assistance, please call Customer Service at 800-345-6007 option 1, then option 5. Ardiasm

Surprising power, yet lightweight and easy to handle.
I've rented the 2-man augers before, and frankly I didn't expect this 1-man auger to be able to do the same job. I'm 63 now and after using my post hole digger to dig 4 holes, my wrists were pretty sore from the tedious work of jamming it into the dirt pulling the handles apart, and trying to lift the dirt out a little at a time to dig down 30". I had to do another hole and I'm glad I broke down and got this auger. Although it doesn't eliminate the need for a post hold digger and a breaker bar to bust/pry out stones, it made the whole process much easier. The compact design is easy to lift and super simple to put together. All you have to do is remove the bold from the auger and use it to fasten it to the bottom of the motor. That's it! Nothing else to do. The auger itself came in a separate box, so make sure you get both the motor and the auger. They also include some 50:1 oil that you mix with a gallon of gas since it's a 2-cycle engine. Then just shake up the gas to mix it. Starting is super easy too. Just switch the choke level to the on position, press the On/Off button to turn it on, and squeeze the primer bulb about 4 times. I did it till I could see it fill with gas. Then justs pull the rope a few times and it'll start right up. When it does, move the choke lever halfway off till the engine smooths out. I gave it about a minute since it was brand new. Then shut the choke off. To operate it, there's a lever on the handle that activates the auger. It can get going pretty fast, so you better hold on. I would also caution not to let it go full bore for too long in case you run into a rock, which could stop the auger and really torque your arms. Take it a little at a time and frequently clear the dirt from the hole. You can use your post hole digger for that. Then keep going till you go as deep as you need to. I only wanted to go down about 2 feet for this one, so once the auger blade top is even with the top of the hole, you're probably down 2'. It should get you at least to 30" if you need it to. Where I live, the soil is very rocky and I hit clay about 15" down. There's no auger that's going to do well with either of those things, so you'll still need to use your breaker bar to clear the path for the auger and the post hole digger to remove the loose dirt from the hole. Although it's sort of a workout holding on while operating this thing, it made the process of digging the hole MUCH easier! I can see if you had softer soil, this would just cut right through it like butter, and you'd be all the way down to the engine in no time flat. I would certainly recommend this auger. It will save you a lot on rental fees and it has surprising power for such a smaller machine. It also digs an 8" hole, much bigger than a typical post hole digger, so you have plenty of space around a 4x4 to add your concrete.

        Well powered.
Product works well as expected, easy to hold for a single user and powerful enough to quickly dig holes, even powerful enough when it hits an unforseen object to spin out of your hands and break a forearm :(
