It is a little cold blooded when starting cold, but will start easily when hot. Be sure to let it warm up before using. Works well in hard soil. Will bind when it hits a rock about the size of a fist and the rock will have to be removed manually. Eight inch bit works well for planting plants that are two gallon container. Anything over a two gallon container you will need to go to a 10 inch bit. Haven't used it for fencing but I would recommend using a 10" bit for drilling holes for 4x4 posts. In short, I would recommend purchasing this auger for light duty planting of number of small plants and fences. If you are going to plant a number of larger plants three gallon or more and fences using 4x4 post then purchase both the 4 and 10" augur bits as well. Use the 4" auger bit to tap the holes and then 10" to drill to size. You may also wish to purchase the extensions as well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Only works in warm weather I bought this auger for digging fence post holes in late summer. It worked terrific the first time. I got 3 holes dug and new posts in place on a Saturday. In September I had mixed results as it would not stay running. I only got one hole taken care of. Temperature was upper 40’s. The next Saturday the auger would not start. Temperature was mid 40’s. I called in for warranty and explained my issue when temps were in mid 40’s. Support provided me dealers to take the auger in for service. After a month in service I was told nothing was wrong. I reminded them my issue was when temps below 50 degrees. A few days later service told me the auger is only a warm weather auger. The local service was surprised as they got the information from Earthquake that it won’t start in cold weather. I live in Wisconsin and do not think mid 40’s is cold. I went back and reviewed the website I bought this from and it had no mention of what temperatures it runs on. Buyer beware. Only works in “hot/warm” weather.

I have used this auger to drill holes to set 20 posts so far in the two weeks I've had it. I was setting 4" and 6" posts at different depths, from 18" to 24", and in varying soil from good sandy loam to more of a clay soil. The auger performed well during all drilling, although it was a little tougher to drill through the clay, as would be expected, but it did the job. The E43 unit assembled out of the box quickly and once the fuel tank was filled with the 50:1 fuel/oil mixture, it started on the 3rd pull. The hardest part of the assembly was getting the protective plastic covering off the handles. LOL. I'm very happy with this unit and I would recommend it.

My son wanted to build a fence and to rent one of these for two days was about half the cost of purchasing one. Figuring some other family members will probably want to build a fence someday too "Old Dad" opted to purchase one. This machine worked exactly as I remember, it takes some strength and toughness to do this and now that I'm about 15 years older (57) it is a heck of a workout largely depending on soil conditions. BUT it sure beats digging them by hand. This machine started and ran well, did what we expected it to do so I am a completely satisfied customer.

I figured I'd try it since it was so cheap instead of renting. I had over 200 holes to dig in desert country. We have rocks here so you need to be ready at all times. Because it can twist pretty hard. Mainly on rocks the size of a softball. Which you need to pull those out anyways. But I learned to ease the throttle and it wont be so violent. I like the power and how light weight it is. It is saving me alot of time and money apposed to a post hole digger or renting. Plus I can do it at my own pace.

Fired up great straight out of the box and loved it for those 10 holes. Then, it stopped running for more than a few seconds. Talked with their customer service team and didn't get a solution. Let it cool off for lunch and returned to the now cold auger on a 60 degree day. It wouldn't start to save it's life. Had to return and consequently rent from Home Depot.

This product is surprisingly powerful and exceeded my expectations by a considerable margin. Even though it is lightweight it still delivers enough torque to drive the auger, sometimes digging a two and a half foot deep hole in 30 seconds. It will not go through sandstone nor does it clear large rocks but it will cut through roots of about 3/4". I highly recommend this product.

This auger did well for the first 4”. I DO have rocky soil and am taking this into consideration but I do not recommend this auger. Only PRO is the auger bit is longer than competitors
