Questions & Answers

I want this just for the breaker. Is it possible to take the breaker out?

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Sg
Yes, very easily. You simply pull the bottom end out then pull down to unhook the tab in the back and it's out.

Why is there no pigtail from the breaker

Asked by: Helphottub
There is rarely, if ever, a pigtail from a breaker box. Breakers, as well as most hot tubs, are "hard wired", especially if they require 220V. All you need is a few feet of wire from HD, slipping one end into the breaker holes and tightening the screws and similarly on the tub terminal block (about a 5 minute job once you have the material and the box mounted). I slid my wire through some flex "rubber" conduit between the tub and box (code probably requires that); it was relatively easy. Conversely, some TUBS may have pigtails, but in that case there would probably be a male plug on the end, so to accommodate it you'd need to "hard wire" a female outlet below or near the breaker box to plug into (another pigtail on the box wouldn't be appropriate). Hope this helps. Enjoy your tub.

Do you need to run a neutral?

Asked by: Codyjay4200
Absolutely. This is a GFCI box to prevent electrocution if you touch the wrong thing with wet feet, or if there's a fault in the tub. It's mandatory for tubs by most "codes" and requires both a neutral and an independent ground to make it work. Thus, if you're doing 220V, you'll need 4 wires (3 for 110V). Check the instructions carefully as you don't connect the neutral and the ground to the same terminal.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I had a hard time finding the circuit breaker... I had a hard time finding the circuit breaker for my spa, so I bought the box to get the breaker, The breaker seems to last only 2 years then needs to be replaced, would be better if the contacts were made of copper, I am thinking of changing the breaker and box to something more reliable.

You should protect the unit from heavy rain to prevent water seeping through it and causing potential damage Let me declare I did not buy this particular product but bought a similar product from another home improvement store. The problem I experienced is applicable to similar product in my opinion. After installing my 220V/50A GFCI unit for my swimspa, it ran great for couple months then 1 day the spa stopped working. After the spa maintenance guy's diagnostic, he concluded that it is the GFCI not working. I therefore purchased the same unit, replaced it, and everything worked great again as it should. The speculated root cause, according to the spa maintenance guy, is that the metal box can protect it from light rain but if it is heavy rainfall (which happened before the first unit went bad) with water seeping into the GFCI it may fail it. Back to the first damaged unit when I tried to turn it on, it tripped immediately, set in the middle position, and not allowing me to flip the switch all the way up, while the spa power was disconnected from the 220V power. As a result, it was clear that the theory of water getting into the GFCI causing it to fail, is a very probable reason. This is a good lesson learned and unfortunately it is not documented in anywhere thus I hope it is helpful

Spent half a day troubleshooting all of the other spa components, to no avail. Had to call in the spa repairman, who said it had to be a bad gfci. He says he always buys these two at a time with the hope that one will actually work. It says assembled in US, but I bet the breaker is made in a third world place where they save a couple bucks.
