Q:Is there another (not Eaton) brand of breaker that can be used in exchange for these Eaton breakers? They are the worst breakers, I'm on my 4th in six months and my neighbors are going through the same problem... very poor quality breakers.

Q:What is the difference between this and CHFN115A1CS?

    Answer This Question

A:  This dual function breaker was the first generation developed in response to the 2014 NEC (NEC) that now requires AFCI protection in kitchens and laundry areas as well as the historical requirement of ground fault protection. Note that it is no longer available. The CHFN115A1CS is the current generation dual function breaker for CH series loadcenters from Eaton/Cutler-Hammer.

      2 Failed within 2 years
We have a newly constructed home in TX that used these for the wet areas. 2 of 5 failed within two years. The diagnostic code indicates that the self-test is failing, so that makes the issue an internal one, not something with the install.

These are not ready for prime time. Our local code is based on the 2014 NEC which requires AFCI protection on all circuits serving living areas. I got a few of these with GFCI protection for kitchen and laundry circuits where such protection is also required. Haven't even had the inspector out yet and we're already dealing with nuisance trips. My shop vac trips these (and the AFCI-only version) when it's switched off. Just installed a brand new washing machine two days ago that trips the AFCI/GFCI dual-function breaker about 2/3 of the time when the motor activates. Mine say "GEN 2" on the side label. They're also huge, about twice the size of a standard breaker, so the gutters in my CH panel panel are extremely crowded. Each breaker burns 1.3W round the clock. Would advise skipping these on any circuits with large motors where local code allows.

          Horrible
Horrible breakers. Dumping all of them in an incinerator would be an insult to the incinerator. Brand new construction, completed in May ‘22, multiple Eaton breakers replaced, all GF/AF breakers failed, some straight out of the box. So bad that appliance manufacturers have service bulletins advising technicians to check if Eaton breakers present as first step in diagnostic. Whirlpool advising that warranty may not be honored if Eaton breakers on appliance circuit. Stay away from these.
