How long after installation can I use white stain on the cedar and the fir? Which would take a white stain best? Which is more durable for outdoor use?
It is recommended to paint or stain before installation, however if finishing after installation we would suggest simply waiting for any adhesive to dry. Both woods accept stains, though western red will be slightly darker in finish. As for outdoor use, western red cedar contains tannins which act as a natural deterrent to pests and insulate it against exterior conditions, while douglas fir is most commonly used for structural applications.
Can these be used under soffit? I plan to stain but there will be exposure to weather.
Yes, these can be used under a soffit. They are rated for interior/exterior use and can be painted or stained. Keep in mind that while they can withstand some exposure to the elements, applying a stain will help protect them further.
