Hello BAFF, Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot regarding 1-3/8 in. White Plastic Pole Sockets (2-Pack). It is recommended to have it be the diameter of the Pole Socket so it will work. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future.
The Everbilt 2 in. White Plastic Pole Sockets (2-Pack) application recommendation is to be used for closets and with closet rods up to 1-3/8 in. in diameter.
I personally have used regular size curtain rods in the closet hang rail sockets, but it was on a window 15' up a wall. I needed to block the sun and had the larger rail sockets on hand, so I installed them, and all was great. BUT again, it was 15' up a wall so the fact that the smaller rod wobbled was not an issue.
Sure, it can be smaller. I used mine to prevent my bathtub shower curtain tension rod from constantly slipping and falling down. Instead of securing them with the supplied screws, I used double-sided adhesive tape on my tile walls. The rubber ends of the shower curtain rod were a little smaller than the opening in the pole socket, so it fit beautifully, looks great, and most importantly, I solved my problem!
